perhaps the more formal equation would be: ND - D1 athletics - catholocism +ivy status + 150 additional miles to nearest city = cornell?

Cornell has D-1 athletics... just 1-AA football, and shitty ivy 1 everything else (except lax/crew which the ivy league is good in)

Undergrad, yes. But overall, no. ND has doesn't have any notable graduate schools except maybe Theology and Philosophy. The law school is TTT.

people would agree with you that MIT is TTT. I am not predisposed to over-ranking technical schools, but, in my opinion, MIT is one of the finest educational institutions in the world, and ditto for Penn. I disagree with you on this.

Brown, Cornell, and Penn all have far superior law school placement at HYS, the gateway to the uber prestigious law jobs. Brown's placement at the top medical schools is so far above Notre Dame(top 5 in the nation)there really isn't much else to say. The last comprehensive attempt to evaluate collegiate prestige, based on a 2000 data set, showed Brown as being just below HYPS, and all the Ivies as being vastly more competitive in the common admit battles than Notre Dame. Notre Dame is a good school, but every single ivy blows it away.

I revisited my research and stand corrected. The Revealed Preferences rankings were as follows, comparing the Ivies to Notre Dame.

1)Harvard

2)Yale

5)Princeton

6)Brown

7)Columbia

9)Dartmouth

11)Penn

12)Notre Dame

14)Cornell.

my comment was more that, if you take the *same* student and put him at Notre Dame for 4 yrs versus putting him in upstate NY, 4 hrs away from civilization, for 4 years, i expect the ND kids to be happier and achieve more of their goals. why? they didnt waste 4 yrs chasing a piece of paper bc the school was (barely) an ivy league school. ND has a great atmosphere. Cornell is a dump. HTH

my revised comment above supports your position. Every Ivy wins the common admit battle with Notre Dame "except" Cornell. However, your characterization of Ithaca as a dump is a bit extreme. Some love it there, even the cold winters. To each his or her own.

at my HS (which wasnt even that prestigious but did have a high % of asians), only the loser kids who had "a few AP classes" and were 1400ish scorers went to Cornell.

kids who were actually winners went to every other ivy (including Penn, which was like the local safety school bc i was in Philly), MIT, ND, Georgetown, etc.

it was common to apply to every Ivy *except* Cornell (i myself did this) and make your safety school a place that would give a free ride (usually a large public)

honestly, i think its a good stategy. no one really *wants* to go to Cornell. its just a place to get a piece of paper and have a good shot at grad school. then again, so is any other Top 25 UG school.

You seriously think South Bend, Indiana is a better city than Ithaca?

Are you a SLU or Marquette student who just can't get over the rejection letter from ND so you troll like mad for them?

No, but I've been to South Bend (went for the ND-Stanford game this Fall) and its much better. The campus and atmosphere at ND are head and shoulders above Cornell. Also, nationwide, ND has lay prestige whereas Cornell does not.

As the other guy posted, ND actually BEATS Cornell head-to-head in battles for cross-admitted UG students.

Apparently I'm not the only one that thinks Ithaca is TTT.

BTW, South Bend is about an hour from Chicago. It's closer to civilization than Ithaca... HTH

If by "about an hour," you mean "about 2 hours," then sure.

And you're basing this on a football game?

I can't speak for the UGs, but I find the original post analogous to saying "UIUC + big city + 500 students = Georgetown"

I don't really think ND and Cornell's law schools are very comparable.
