The PlayStation Classic was more than just a failed product. It was a reckoning.

The Ubisoft formula didn’t come from nowhere. It was born in the rot of the Western PlayStation era. A time when games stopped being games and started being tricks. Flash over function. Cinematics over control. The illusion of depth.
Look at the Western PlayStation library. A landfill of janky, soulless slop. Syphon Filter, stiff and clumsy. Tomb Raider, a joke of movement. Driver, a physics nightmare. They didn’t care how it played. They cared how it looked. That was enough. That was the sickness.
Ubisoft didn’t invent this. They inherited it. They took the disease and made it their business model. The PlayStation was the first symptom. Western devs let it fester. And now we live in the plague.

The main features underpinning what makes something like the "Ubisoft formula" possible didn't exist until the next generation of consoles.
Everything about flash over function etc. can still be true but the main element of the Ubisoft formula is the tediousness which never became possible until a generation later when developers could fill up a bunch of space with repetitive bullshit, feel proud of it, and successfully market it as some great accomplishment.
Yeah PlayStation devs only cared about how the games looked but that didn't end with players drowning in the same boilerplate gameplay wherever they turned. You decided what you'd tolerate and that would be it. The Ubisoft formula operates on a different principle.

The guy's unhinged, a bunch of his past comments are about defending the Sega 32X, about how he makes his son play it and supposedly it makes him "stronger" or something. He sounds like a stereotypical asian dad, except instead of telling his kid to work hard, he makes him play a crappy failed console add-on.

The best games were Squaresoft JRPGs.
FF7
FF9
FF Tactics
Xenogears
Vagrant Story
Add in
Metal Gear Solid
Castlevania SOTN
Resident Evil 2
Silent Hill
It was a golden age. The PS classic was just shovelware and doesn’t open the door to relitigate the past. 100 million units sold champ.
