Looking for a new hobby I can do with friends.
I haven't really played before (except in like a low stress “scramble” for charity events but that’s about it). Don’t know anything about golf. My goal is basically to be comfortable on the golf course and not be embarrassingly bad.
I’m assuming just pay for some pro lessons at my local golf course?

I started pretty recently.
Best way is to take lessons, seek out low stakes spots like pitchandputt, par 3 / exec courses.
Play these for a bit and you'll be better than most if you're not retarded. Worst case you'll know how not to embarrass yourself which is all that's really needed.

Nope.
Right now he's working on having a fun day playing golf, he's not working on lowering his meaningless score.
Driver and approach shots are by far the most important things to focus on.

I am saying that literally any retarded person can put the ball on the green then putt 2-3 times into the hole.
You need to know how to drive the ball then hit said ball 150+ towards the green. Everything else is comparatively easy unless you're working towards a sub-bogey handicap. Obviously OP is not there yet.
If you can't putt/chip you can't score well. If you can't drive or hit an iron from time to time, you literally can't play gold.

Look, I have not been misled by anyone.
I am telling you how things are as a new player of golf. I posted the recent thread about getting an 88 on my first ever round playing 18 holes (you probably posted in that thread, and full disclosure my best score since then is +11 over nine). I'll be playing either dyker beach or a long island course this weekend and will update the board.
As a beginner, being able to get the ball in play off the tee is way, way more important (both to your fun had in general and your overall score) than putting 2x vs 3x per hole.

Brother I have lied about literally everything on here except in my golf and lacrosse threads. I have truthfully documented on here how bad I am at golf.
Again, OP isn't trying to reduce his score to a certain number. He is trying to play golf to have fun.
It's way more fun to be able to hit a straight drive 200+ yards then knock it towards the green than it is to chip and putt well when you're already ten shots in, which is what happens to most beginners who can't get off the tee.
Short game allows you to score well, but you literally cannot play the game unless you can get off the tee.

yeah this was what earl woods said in his book “training a tiger” iirc.
that building from the short game up brings confidence and overall skill eventually. less frustrating, often rewarding even at early stages etc
he was talking about teaching kids but also applies to olds learning on they’re own

tbh just pick something else. big golfmo and generally love it but i started as a kid and i was always decent at it. don’t get why anyone would want to start as an old and just suck unless they have nothing else they could possibly spend they’re time on.
what other hobbies do you already have?

I tried to pick it up as an unathletic oldmo like 8 years ago and I still completely suck, despite taking lessons and playing all the time.
That said I really enjoy it.

Men should not get into golf until:
(1) They have a long-established routine of doing real exercise (nearly) every day.
(2) They are already putting sufficient time and efforts into their existing family and friend relationships.
(3) They spend enough time with their spouse that she's not bitter about not spending enough time with you. (Or she just doesn't give a fuck, even better).
(4) They are professionally (reasonably) successful (or independently wealthy).
And they should only continue playing golf on the condition that none of the foregoing are materially adversely affected. by such playing of golf.

OP here. I ended up finding a coach and taking lessons for awhile. Lots of practice on the practice putting green and driving range.
I’ve got my first tee time today. I’ll be walking 9 holes. Obviously I will be terrible but gotta start somewhere. I’ll report back.

Update:
I played 9 holes. It was just myself and my golf instructor, so we were paired with two other guys (older Japanese dudes).
Yeah, I'm pretty terrible. I felt like I was a lot less consistent than when I'm on the driving range (maybe due to time pressure, the feeling of others watching me and maybe the difference in terrain like sometimes you're hitting the ball on a slight hill?). Felt like I struggled to really make solid contact for most shots and was topping the ball. And then I am slicing even when I do hit the ball well. I had to pick the ball in a couple instances when I was way behind the other players for time. Fairly discouraging overall.
That said, I still had fun. I walked the course so it was a nice workout. And I did make a few solid shots. E.g. I used a sand wedge to hit the ball from the rough about 30 yards up a hill and the ball landed within about 5 feet of the hole. Had some great putts. The group we were with was also very friendly and encouraging, so that was good.
Frankly I have to agree with the poaster above who said that hitting the ball consistently with the driver and irons is more important (at this stage) than the short game for fun. It's frustrating af when I can only hit the ball 1/3 the distance of the other players and they all have to wait for me.
