It's hot as hell, kind of ugly and just full of boomers. Why woudl anyone want to live there

I've lived in 5 states and gone to AZ a lot (since boomer in laws live there) and it's by far the worst state I've spent time in

The failed Florida land boom of the 20s was transposed over to desert resort cities like Phoenix that have tons of nursing homes and military facilities, it's where people go die basically.

I think you're making my point. Most people just think it's ugly desert.

Yes, there's a ton of beautiful spots in AZ. Especially compared to somewhere like Texas or something. Just within driving distance of the Phoenix metro, there's the Mogollon rim and the Tonto natural bridge. In the metro, the Superstition mountains are beautiful and have a ton of great hiking.

we also get snow where i live and we have world class skiing

last time i went hiking in AZ, they told me we were going to a "mountain" and it turned out to be some tiny, barren hill

very sad, and i read an article that phoenix/scottsdale is likely going to run out of water in the next generation or so but they keep building new housing (which is grossly overpriced for what it is)

i'm concerned the mountain west will end up the same, but we rely heavily on tourism and skiing as well (winter olympics were held here), so i think the $$$ interests will incentivize politicians to protect our resources

I'm worried wildfires will keep getting bigger and destroy a lot of marginal forests leading to erosion and desertification. And they are using up all t\he groundwater too. We need zero population growth for a long time

that's true, the wildfires have been a lot worse the past 10 years. i don't remember it being this bad when i was a kid and i grew up largely in the mountain west.

i guess that's one benefit of the tariffs and a degrading economy - people less likely to have as many kids. also less pollution because china isn't exporting as much stuff.

honestly, and this sounds bad, but i wouldn't be opposed to having a one child rule in America - the world is overpopulated and too many poors are having kids as it is.

It’s just because of the heat. People prefer heat to cold. That’s the reason behind all these southern states. People would rather walk from their car to their home when it’s 95 than when it’s 15.

i cannot imagine moving there and living in a suburb or city.

But, little as I know about AZ, I romanticize its desert.

Understand, I detest modern American life. I feel sick in my stomach over it. Imagine eating many cupfuls of nuts, pistachios or something? And now your stomach aches and you have to shit and vomit simultaneous. Youre sweating and sickened? Thats how I feel looking at modernity.

So it seems very aspirational to go live in a death place, an empty place, barren of sound and life. A place of blazing light and complete darkness. Live in a fucking shack and do not speak for 90 day spells, just stare at fraudulent horizons and know that if anyone approaches, you will see him for two hours. Walk out at night into complete blackness and punch your dick, make noises, weep.

that said, arizona is still uglier than much of the east coast. and i don't even particularly like the east coast.

hawaii, parts of california, alaska, mountain west, pacific northwest, much of the east coast, and even the south are better than arizona. arizona is like a hellscape wasteland and i don't get the appeal.

geographically, PNW, mountain west, alaska, hawaii can't be beat imo

california is also very pretty in parts but much of it is also a desert wasteland and forest fires have decimated a lot of it recently

boomers just sort of moved there 15-20 years ago and are there now. no one "wants" or "aspires" to live there.

Phoenix and surroundings seem like it's shit although I like the remote north east parts.

Tucson seems cr to just be stupid rich and live in the desert.

I really like it there

People prefer 120 degree summers over 0-20 degree winters.

People say they like winter but it's mostly a lie. People hate winter and hate the cold. And they vote with their feet = South and Southwest.
