My more detailed history prior to this binge:
Beat RE1 PSX
Beat RE2 PSX
Beat RE3 PSX
Beat Code Veronica Dreamcast
Beat Umbrella Chronicles Wii
Stalled out at the lake chapter in RE4 gamecube. Couldn't adjust to what it had turned into
Played about 1/3 of REmake gamecube. The crimson head mechanic was so fucked
Played a few hours of RE0 gamecube. Game did not grab me
Beat RE5 Xbox 360. At that point it's not RE anymore, it's a generic third person shooter
Never played RE 6.
Playthroughs of RE7 stalled out 1/4 and 1/2 through on PS4 and a reattempt on PC.
Quit RE8 within the first hour.
Now, the unstated logic behind this pattern is that all of the early games were played through with my ex wife. Once we split, I just didn't have the resolve to push through these games alone and didn't enjoy playing them solo (although REmake was a joint attempt defeated by mutual loathing of the crimson heads). I found these games too oppressive to play alone, especially RE7 in particular given the gameplay changes, chase enemies, lack of visually distinct areas, etc.
Then RE Requiem came out and the game was so good and paced so well that there just wasn't a place to stall out at. It comes down 100% to the gameplay switches between Grace and Leon. I wouldn't have made it through a full first person Grace game, but blasting the shit out of everything as Leon every couple of hours broke her sections up enough. Requiem basically restored my love for the series and I finally played through RE2 remake right after, which I probably never would have done without Requiem. And now I'm basically desensitized to these games and kicking the shit out of them. The real test is gonna be whether I finally finish RE7 though.
