912,000 Syrian citizens remain in Germany, and only about 14,600 are currently formally required to leave. Most of the population therefore has some form of lawful residence.

Among the principal protection categories alone, there were about 574,400 people with either Convention refugee status or subsidiary protection:

262,208 Convention refugees

283,981 subsidiary protection

4,219 asylum entitlement

6,765 deportation ban

17,220 contingent refugees

That is about 63% of the entire Syrian citizen population in Germany. There is also an important qualification: the protection-status figures do not capture everyone who originally arrived as a refugee. Some Syrians have subsequently obtained ordinary residence permits through employment, education, family or permanent residence, and therefore no longer appear under the principal refugee-protection categories.

The asylum system is also now dealing with a relatively small residual pipeline: 37,540 pending Syrian applications as of June 2026.
