School forced you to see the same people every day. Work does it for some. But outside of that you have to manufacture the repetition yourself.
There’s a psychology term for this. Propinquity effect. People form bonds with whoever they encounter repeatedly. Not whoever they click with instantly. Not whoever shares their interests perfectly. Whoever shows up consistently in the same space over time. Proximity plus repetition equals relationship. That’s the formula. |

OP is only part of the truth. Teen brains are wired for making any type of connection. Adult brains are more discerning. Some of it is because your experience with previous friends was “holy shit they sucked.” And that cuts both ways. “Holy shit they stabbed me in the back and told people I sucked,” or, “holy shit his phenotype sucked.” So you get to be more discerning.
Also there’s too much schizophrenia among early 20s males and like 90% of people don’t ace OCI and are resigned to Ruin. It’s a demarcation point. |

all you need is a hobby or two, free time, and a modicum of charm and it's easy to meet people consistently. a lot of people are boring but some are cool. i've poasted this before in adult friendship threads but one thing i've noticed is that with the people i've really connected with, we don't really talk about our jobs until we've hung out a handful of times. if you're just vibing talking about common interests and/or thingdoing, the whole "what do you do?" convo doesn't come up right away. |
