So I spoke with a partner at WLRK (Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz) today who went to my undergrad to ask him what he thought of Fordham. For those that don't know, WLRK is considered to be the top law firm (only 160 attorneys or so) in the country. Specifically I asked him whether I should go there or retake the LSAT and apply again. I explained how I wanted to go into Big Law. First he explained to me that in his eyes and the eyes of his colleagues Fordham is a tier 2 law school, but that it is near the top of the tier 2. It sounded like to me that he meant Tier 1 was the T14 schools and then Tier 2 were the next 10 or 15 schools in the rankings with Fordham included. This was good to know considering the fact that Fordham is ranked 32 yet he considers it toe and toe with schools in the 15-20 range (show's how great Fordham's rep is in NYC).
Anyways he straight up told me Fordham grad's have absolutely 0% shot at his firm. He obviously said it in a nicer way and explained how that although it's a great law school, there are obviously better ones out there and he mentioned how they mostly recruit from Harvard, Yale, some COlumbia, NYU, etc. He said that if I go to Fordham I should be near the top of my class to have a shot at the other top law firms in NYC. The whole conversation really just drove it home in my mind that I need to work harder than I ever have before. OBviously I knew that before, but I actually felt the urgency and realized just how important the next year is going to be.
We talked for awhile more but I'm too lazy to type it all out. Anyone that has questions related to this can ask me and I can probably either answer them or relay them back to him.

well said.
WLRK only really recruits out of HLS & YLS, maybe CLS. they havent even hired out of NYU in a few yrs.
obsessing over WLRK is stupid. its an awful place to work on top of that.

a) 1 of the NYU is Wachtell's son, Dan Wachtell
b) Penn+Chicago+SLS=4? wow, what a good reason to pick a LS based *soley* on where WLRK hires. seriously.
c) how does this contradict what i said? 1% of HLS students end up at WLRK. 3% of YLS students end up at WLRK. for all other t14, its a 0.2% chance in any given year. this year the entire rest of the t14 got a grand total of 4.
if anything, although i wasnt 100% correct, this means i'm right in telling this kid to get real.

"It sounded like to me that he meant Tier 1 was the T14 schools and then Tier 2 were the next 10 or 15 schools in the rankings with Fordham included"
On what basis did you conclude that this is what he meant? Maybe he really thinks it a tier 2 school?

LOL. Well. Duh!! (and I go to Fordham).
Maybe this should say: PSA, do not go to any school other Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, NYU, Penn, and maybe some other ones, if you want a shot at WLRK.

Why the fuck would you want to work there.
LSAT retaking 0L's should not be sniffing partner's crotches asking how to get a job at that shit hole.

how is this even controversial? WLRK only interviews at a handful of schools. and they only interview top students.
therefore, its stupid to base your LS decision off of where WLRK recruits. what % of HLS or YLS even have a *shot* at WLRK?
fact is, if you go to fordham LS, you can get v10. key is, go to a good UG (many fordham students have this covered), do LRev and be top 10%. interview well. work a little during school (a managing clerk's office at biglaw is a good gig, though hard to get).
you should base your LS decision off of where STB, CSM, and S&C interview. if you can get into HLS or YLS, good, but insisting you go to them just so you can have a 5% chance at WLRK instead of a 0.5% chance is just stupid.

UG is a credential much like LR. If you have really shitty grades, it'll help you a lot. If you already have good grades, its utility decreases (but there's still a tangible benefit).
Of course, grades are still more important, and you'll get an elite job with good grades at a solid law school, but an ivy UG can give you a significant boost at the super-elite firms.

example: student @ Fordham Law with Ivy UG vs. similarly ranked student at Emory Law w/ TTT UG. Fordham is going to win that battle, esp in NYC.

No, they'll get elite jobs, just as they would if they had great LS grades and no LR.
Grades are dispositive as to whether you'll get an elite firm job. The other factors (like LR or UG) tend to determine which particular firm you'll work at.
It's also worth noting, though, that this assumes equal personalities. A good personality is worth a good UG several times over.
EDIT: TESTING 123 TESTING 123

they apparently took 2 this yr.
however, one of them is W's son Dan (Princeton '02, NYU Law'07)
before this yr, i dont think they had hired out of NYU in a number of years. i could be wrong, but thats the word within v10 circles and i tend to believe it

Are you retarded? One of those people has worked for 25 years to make her way to become an associate. You could have made partner at any firm 3 times over by then.
The other person clerked on the second circuit COA, and has been working for like 10 years.
This doesn't show anything.
