Trustafarian posted a joke on the internets. He confessed to it, showing strong character. He could have easily hid behind the his internet anonymity and even if somehow the post was linked to him by IRL, the criminal case against him would have been impossible to win. He could have just denied everything (like a LAWYER would advise a client to do) and gotten off. But unlike a client, he held himself to higher moral standard and stepped up to the plate.
Everyone makes mistakes and has lapses in judgement. But this dood confessed and took the moral high ground. Of everyone making character attacks towards him, I don't think anyone has actually stopped to think about what he really did.
The true sociopath in this situation is WG (who is probably PW) who took great pleasure in fucking up this kids life. He absolutely knew there was no genuine threat, but wanted to watch the farce that he knew would erupt if he contacted the authorities. It wasn't even Trustafarian's post that he referred the authorities to, it was his own... WG, who took pleasure in hurting Trustafarian, is the real asshole here.
Just my 2 cents...

Well stated.
The worst part is that WG never once thought that the threat was real, but reported him for his own publicity. Hence the "I'm the tattle tale, taking questions" thread.

This is the most asinine, juvenile argument I've seen on this issue. Let me get this straight: Someone fucks up big time, admits he fucked up big time, and you want us to treat him like a hero because he admitted he fucked up? Did your parents raise you in a complete moral vacuum?
The attacks against WG are LAUGHABLE. Something I would expect out of a group of 4th graders, really. You believe that he "hurt" Trustafarian because he called a law school to tell them about a post. The law school then had the complete discretion to decide how to handle the situation from that point forward... and it of its own volition decided to evacuate the campus and call the FBI. The FBI, which also had complete discretion on how to handle the situation, decided to follow up by questioning Trustafarian. Two entities, one of whom is among the largest and most powerful law enforcement agencies in the United States with decades of experience behind it, decided to take the matter seriously. But under your logic, it's *WG* who "hurt" Trustafarian.
If you want to make jokes about killing people, part of the risk that comes with the thrill (*rolls eyes*) of doing it is that law enforcement will want to knock on your door.
Trustafarian hurt Trustafarian, fucktard.

I'll tell it to you straight:
Someone makes a stupid joke in the worst possible taste -- which is par for xoxo -- realizes its stupidity almost immediately and deletes it. Meanwhile some lurker full of schadenfreude, carefully preserves the stupid joke and calls the authorities, pretending it is a serious threat.
Once the idiot jokester realizes his idiot joke has been escalated out of his control, he admits he was the jokester rather than having the board going through a meltdown of epic proportions which would probably mean the end of xoxo. He's fully prepared to take his punishment like a man, although likely no one could ever have traced his stupidity to him.
To me, the lurker is the evil grinning shit stirrer only too pleased that, without being personally responsible, he was able to shut down a school based on what he surely knew was an idiotic joke. But instead he pretends it was the only sensible thing to do, and keeps coming back to the board looking for approval. The FBI doesn't know any better and the law school deans don't know any better. The lurker's ability to spin a stupid joke as a threat persuaded them to take it seriously.

I agree. He did something stupid, but he immediately took responsibility and put himself on the line to prevent any more damage.
I really hope the relevant authorities see the virtue in what he did to correct the situation when it started to get out of control.

Moron. You can't "easily" hide from the FBI. Maybe this retard just smartened up fast enough to realize this fact. Don't be an idiot and think this had anything to do with some moral value he held.
And don't attribute anything to PW. He's nothing more than an attention-whoring faggot, and he didn't do anything.

As someone who consistantly likes to push the buttons on this site in various monikers, I can relate to the guy in wanting to put up a relevant, controversial thread that he himself found funny that he thought others might.
However, you sometimes have to know where to draw the line. He fucked up and while I don't think it should ban him from bar membership (which it might likely do), I think when you are a habitual line stepper you sometimes have to face up to the consequences.
But to quote Voltaire and then again Peter Griffin, "I may disagree with what you have to say but I will, to the death, defend your right to say it."

it was dumb, and i don't think it was reasonable for him to think it would be fine if he posted it. that said, i'd be fine with C&F giving him a break or making him wait a year and then passing him.

I support this. It was a bad joke, but it was a joke. A big part of what keeps this board active, interesting, and useful is that people feel comfortable making jokes. Often they are distasteful, often they are just not very funny, but you don't always know except in hindsight.
I think it's worth remembering, none of us has to be funny, or informative, or really post anything. It benefits all of us that people do try to push the envelope, but there is very little incentive for individual posters to do so, and stuff like this makes it all the more likely that the risk will far outweigh any incentive in the future.

Are you Rowan?
I normally like your posts, but this was ridiculous. As I had said on other threads, I knew within 1 second of reading the Trustafarian thread that his life was over.
And let me make another point. I think your perception of the values and standard of decency on the board has been completely warped by the presence of a few mega-posters with 20 monikers each. 99.9% of posters and lurkers to this site were not joking about the Virginia Tech massacre. That was fucking dispicable.
NEWSFLASH: Trustafarian was one of those people. It's totally unacceptable, anti-social behavior to joke about a massacre of people in a school one day after it occurs. That a half-dozen sociopaths made 10,000 posts doing so does not change the fact.
That speaks to some fundamental character flaws in Trustafarian, and while I hope he can rebuild his life at some point, huge consequences are all that would likely change him for the better. If he is just some lemming who emulates internet sociopaths and simply did not know what he was doing, I'm truly sorry, but that also speaks to a remarkable lack of judgment.

Ridiculous. The fact that he fessed up and went straight to the FBI showed incredibly poor judgment on his part, doubly so because he's a law student.
The FIRST thing he should have done is contacted a lawyer and used every legal tactic and maneuver at his disposal to protect himself. It demonstrates horrendous judgment on his part that he failed to do this.

Sometimes those noble few are executed on the altar of freedom. Rising up from the ashes of their destruction can often come a rebirth of virtue - let us never forget our role in the preservation of free speech. This event hopefully will burn into the minds of every XOXOer what the true value of our community is and what it represents. Even at a noble institution such as Boalt that gives ample lip service to the advocacy of free speech, this is the reality of their policies. The persecution of Trustafarian demonstrates that is not US who lack moral conviction or character. Never let anyone say XOXO is the bane of the internet society, for the reality of the morals of those individuals in power outside of our community are those that truly disgust me.

To: Boalt Community
From: Dean Christopher Edley, Jr.
It has been a week since the distressing events involving a Boalt student's threat —a hoax — against the community at Hastings College of the Law. I am writing to let you know that all our actions following the incident have been taken with the intention of securing the safety and well-being of our community and that at Hastings, while respecting the procedural rights of the student.
On Wednesday, April 25, 2007, the Law School filed a complaint with the U.C. Berkeley Judicial Affairs Office against the law student who claimed responsibility for posting the threat on a website. We, the administrative leadership of Boalt, believe that the student's action is clearly in violation of a number of regulations detailed in the Student Code of Conduct. The case will be adjudicated by Judicial Affairs according to campus regulations. Those regulations prohibit us from disclosing the name of the student against whom we are proceeding.
Based on the facts as we understand them today, we have recommended expulsion. This is based not only on the intrinsic wrongfulness of the act itself, but also the disruption, turmoil and emotional toll on the Hastings community and, to a more limited extent, the Boalt community as well. I have received ample evidence of this through a great many emails, some of them painful to read.
This incident has once again confirmed for me the strength and qualities of the Boalt community. Even in this challenging circumstance, you have engaged in thoughtful and productive discussions. We should all take some pride in this, imperfect though we are.
Christopher Edley, Jr.
