I wouldn't go so far as to implement all of the devices they have (no profiles, no avatars, no division of boards into prelaw/students, no post count). But the moderation on that board has allowed it to develop a very good atmosphere for discussing on topic law school stuff. Spammers and agressive trolls are not tolerated on LSD. Within a few posts you often receive a warning, they lock or delete the thread or offending posts and you will be banned if you continue. I've been banned myself, so I know. Sure, people here would come back under 20 proxy IPs and spam all day, but eventually you can make them give up if you just keep at it. Old threads with one response or no responses or without any substantive replies, and all old offtopic threads that are not obviously "classic" threads should be deleted, because they make the search function frustratingly useless. Also, people would be less able to drag up old information on posters that they can then bump and start outing projects with a tidbit of fact a poster revealed months or years ago. It is not enough that you can only google on topic threads. More than anything, you should really delete ALL the threads about any of the people who have been defamed here. There is simply no real reason for there to be so many threads about those nice girls at Yale. Despite the freedom of speech we all have here, I think you realize that it is time to change the board and I urge you not to let that make it seem okay to allow the defamation most reasonable people here do not find any value in. You might piss off some old regulars, but the best thing that could happen for them is if that makes them stop posting. If you want a future in which XO has anything to do with law, you need to make serious big changes to revitalize your dying board. As mentioned above, two key things you HAVE to implement is a better moderated school-related function and registration requirements. It is difficult to read the school stuff because of how we mark them ourselves, so I think having a moderator actually approve it as school related would be a good idea. Read this entire thread, and decided to pound this out since I’ve thought it for at least two years. Rach, you've never impressed me, and while I'm glad you salvaged the PR community back in the day, and while I'm glad you've been paying for it a long time now, there are plenty of things about you I actively dislike. I don't even know really why I'm making this post, as 1) most of the people I enjoy talking to no longer post here, 2) I don't care about the lawboard, 3) nothing on this board has changed in its, what, four year history, 4) I'm probably going to quit again within a week or two. Regardless, I'm going to provide some opinions because I really want this type of community to survive. *******LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE The main issue isn’t search/no search, or moderation/free speech, or whatever. Those details are important, and will affect things like this lawsuit you guys keep talking about, but ultimately, you've got to look at the big picture. Fix the big problems and the little problems become easier. The main issue is that you have no realistic, clear goal for this board. This spawns all the little problems, because you can't give people what they want, because you don't know what you want, and what you DO know is not realistic. The collegeboard's community is dying, you cannot expand the grad/med boards, you have apparently failed to capture the pre-law community, and the site in general is simply not growing. Part of this is because people are reluctant/afraid to come to a site where people get outed, there are legal issues, etc., but most if it is indirectly because you have not chosen a clear, realistic goal. *******CRITICAL MASS A small community of posters run the way we've been run is fine. Maybe a little tiff, someone gets outed, not a big deal. That's essentially been the college side. Dozens of people have gotten outed through the years, some leave, some don't, whatever. We've had countless trolls and spammers, who have made the board insufferable at times. It goes on, spammers get bored, people come back and still post. But as the community gets bigger, you eventually reach a critical mass like the lawboard, and when something happens, it's really problematic. Outings have more impact, spammers get a bigger audience and affect more people, whatever. The goal you seem to have, of the site being run the same way it's always been run, is unrealistic. It just can't happen if you care at all about growing the site. *******OLD PHILOSOPHY PREVENTS GROWTH Look, as an old reg, I appreciate the novelty and attractiveness of the board's overall philosophy of simplicity: no post counts, no profiles or avatars, no moderation, simple interface, and all that. Most of that is just good design, simply excellent functionality. PR made a good system, with the reply-trees and the frames. However, this lack of moderation and the resulting complete freedom I wouldn't have cared for when I first started posting, when I was looking for college advice. After that was over with, when I stuck around because I knew posters, we talked on AIM, had 20-people AIM chats, met up in real life; when all I did was argue about politics or engage in the outstanding blend of juvenile and sophisticated humor characteristic of PR/xo, THAT'S when I began to prefer the freedom. It gives the board a unique position between moderated forums and 4chan. But you can't grow the site and keep it the same way. Some problems: *******FUCKWADS PROBLEMATIC AFTER CRITICAL MASS This site is a great example of the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19 ), only worse because of the sheer amount of attention one person can get on this board. The one guy makes everybody else suffer because everybody sees his posts. Without anonymity, the prospect of being punished socially for being a fuckwad is a strong disincentive. Can’t get rid of anonymity, so without moderation (what every other board uses) you have few options. You could make it expensive (time/effort) to be a fuckwad: stricter registration requirements, limited accounts per IP, etc. You could take away fuckwads' power to pick their audience: People could set personal filters on posts, threads, screen names, even block specific posters. You could create artificial social disincentives, maybe like craigslist's flagging system. All these things were mentioned above. But I can't see any of them except the personal filters working in the long term or against a particularly dedicated fuckwad. Specific fuckwaddery: outing people. Nobody seems to have a problem with banning this to help retain posters, so do it. As was suggested above, you can out people who out others, ban the accounts, IP ban them, whatever. Yes, people could just go to a public library, make a gmail account, register on the board, out someone, and run. And if you you can't delete the thread in time, the damage is done. But this is no different from any other online messageboard. Somebody would really have to hate you to go to that trouble, and if you're giving away information about yourself, you're knowingly taking a risk. The problem is that on this board, the freedom to say complete crap you wouldn't ever want connected to your real life tempts most people to do it. It just means if you want to post utter garbage, you're incentivized to be super careful. If you don't care for that luxury, then you can be more relaxed. Delisting the site from google is setting free advertisement on fire. Deleting threads at a specified age is a pretty inefficient way of solving the problem. There’s no real easy way to do this without moderation. On the topic of posting shit about uninvolved offline parties, I don’t really know how the law looks at that. But I don’t see a problem with the popular suggestion posted above, banning real names. Would require at least passive moderation. *******ATTRACTING NEW BLOOD If you can solve that problem, you’re better at keeping people who are already here here. I don't know if the lawboard has a problem attracting new off-topic posters, but on the collegeboard, we have always had this serious shortage of new blood. A big problem is that undergrad residential life is more social than law student lives, so it's harder to grow that market. It’s why most of our posters came when they were in high school. But the biggest problem is, once again, a lack of a cohesive, realistic goal for the site. You say you want new posters, but you're not doing anything that would help that. You've actually just given up on the college side, and people have pretty much lost hope that it'll make it another year or two; when 08 graduates, it could be the end. CC has always been a shitfest, but with PR undergoing the ill-advised overhaul in 04 CC just snapped everything up and we sat here jerking off to our self-righteous freedom of speech. There were pretty much three players in the market, and now there's one, run by a bunch of fruitcakes. Don't know about law side, but without the automatic advertising that came with being associated with Princeton Review, the college board never figured out how to grow. Apparently, the law side has lost the pre-law discussion market as well. Not to mention med/grad. *******NARROW THE MARKET, AIM FOR JACKASSES LIKE US So you need to figure out a working goal. Are you trying to attract people interested in finding information about college/law admissions? In other words, on-topic posters? Are you trying to attract people who just want to post about random stuff with other young, educated people, i.e., off-topic posters? Somewhere between CC and 4chan, you probably want something like a somethingawful but college/law -oriented, right? You could attract the former, and hope they stay on the board and become the latter, the way most of us got here. Or looking at the demoralizing stamps of approval on the CC site from NYTimes/CNNMoney/etc., you may want to differentiate the market and attract the "edgier" crowd of college applicants. This could work for law too in competition with that other site. *******ATTRACTING ON-TOPIC (JACKASS) NEWBIES You need to change the site so that it's still attractive for on-topic newbies, even the edgy kind who doesn't mind reading ridiculous threads. If they can't get what they want, they're not going to spend the time getting acquainted with the site and wanting to return. One big reason for this is the huge barriers to entry. I never migrated over to the more active LB partly because I didn't have the domain knowledge, the understanding of years of board drama and personalities and tons of that shit. I see a name and a post and it means nothing to me. It just wasn't worth my time to invest in learning all that bullshit. If I had never been a collegeboard poster, I wouldn't have started on that side either. People who want real genuine advice on the ostensible main topic of discussion get shat on. There is no incentive for them to come here over some other, unbearably dull, but heavily moderated board where they get what they googled for: college/law admissions discussion. I think banning spammers or implementing personal filters could give the initial push to make the LB more attractive. There are probably tons of things you could do, that are more invasive. More on that later. I don't know an easy way to deal with the collegeboard's problem. CC is the first link on google, has a newbie-friendly group of forums/subforums, a professional-looking site, the aforementioned stamps of approval, and tons of posts a day. Makes it really enticing for a high school junior to read and post. The PR/XO reply-tree format is great in general, but particularly so for fragmented discussions, which is less of a need for on-topic posters. Our visual simplicity (date, author, post, nothing else) doesn't convey information useful to newbies efficiently. A newbie would read a post by someone and not have any information on that poster--how long he's been here, his age, his school/major, blah blah. I never gave a shit about that stuff, but I can imagine a lot of on-topic newbies getting turned off by our really brutal interface. Also, the system of manual categorization GTO made is terrible. It probably hurts the site more than helps it, as some newcomer will click a category first thing, see that there are five posts on the topic in the last year, and get the fuck out of here. If you really want those categories, it's best to allow the OP to select a category to post under at the very beginning. Also, there are way, way too many categories. I mean, it's just comical really. You could start a sticky on the college side on this topic if you want more small suggestions for drawing in on-topic newbies. *******FUCK THE REGS. THINK LIKE A CEO Everything above in this post is really what’s wrong with things. You’re completely held hostage by this old way of thinking from dumb regs who are too fucking scared of change. People like the barebones format. People like the lack of moderation. People like the little red dots. People like the ability to make billions of aliases and flood the board with some “witty” comment. People like me wanted all that shit. But people are dumb. If you really think about the problems associated with attracting posters and then keeping them here, you’ll realize that the lawboard has hit critical mass, and can’t grow by doing the same things. And the collegeboard isn’t attractive to newbies because of the way the board is set up, and can’t grow by doing the same things. They’re just fundamentally flawed for creating a growing internet community. You need to make a business decision about this site. You can try to patch up the leaks and hotfix certain things, or you can really put some work into it. Most likely, you are going to have to invest yourself into the site significantly. I have no idea what your situation is right now. Do you go to school? Work a job? What kind of income do you have? You will need some kind of income from the site. You cannot do this for free, even if you think you can. You’ll get bored of it soon, you won’t be motivated, and nothing will get done, again. You need AdSense or banner ads or something that provides money you can use to implement changes. This means you are going to have to get rid of things people like, and make tough decisions. Again, ignore the crybaby regs. It very well might be worth it in the long run to implement something that people don’t like if it’s best for the site. If I hadn’t thought about this as seriously as I have today, I would whine and bitch about banner ads. But if it allows you to hire some high school kid part-time to redesign the site to make it attractive to his classmates, you need to ignore turds like me and do it. If Google will only buy ad space if you delete every thread that bore witness to outings, archive the threads, make a sticky about it, and then do it the next day. You can always change the rules back later once you have the freedom that cash provides. *******MODERATION People are starting to ask for moderation on the board, but because you haven’t set a clear, realistic goal, they’re trying to continue the lame, totally fucked idea of free impartial moderation. That’s not going to happen, particularly since the lawboard has hit critical mass. The somethingawful rules are quite good actually. They’re gigantic, so I’m sure they’ve passed some critical mass at which it became impossible to grow and allow certain behavior, so there are a few things I would change for this site. Overall, though, their purpose is pretty clear: to ensure the community runs smoothly and maximize the benefit posters get from it, and that’s with a self-selecting population tending toward a certain jackass personality, a few shades milder than us.
