ML and Lisp are functional languages, whereas the most common languages (C++, Java) are imperative. Functional languages tend to be more abstract, which makes them more powerful but accessible to fewer people. |

I'm not even sure you could run AF on the newer versions of CF that most hosting providers offer or even find the software. Allaire opensourced it years ago, so maybe there's a copy floating around somewhere.
Boondocks and rachmiel just looked at the CFML and translated it (poorly) to PHP. |

ColdFusion enjoyed its brief success because liberal arts majors could build a database-driven website pretty easily and quickly with just a decent understanding of HTML. You didn't need an EE or even a CS degree. Unfortunately, that led to a lot of really crappy code that was almost impossible to maintain and didn't scale well at all. If folks are interested, though, I can tell you about how it works. It's pretty easy, really. I think you'd get more out of it writing your own than just playing around with our (old and relatively messy) code. |
