I don't want to get a 'mom-cut' or stiff anchorwoman hair, but I'm wondering how much I can get away with my lazy freeflowing hairstyle in BIGLAW? What seems to be acceptable?
I have very long hair, and I normally just wash it and let it air dry, doing whatever. Will this fly? What about just pulling a part of it back with a clip? (although I don't want to have to do that all the time). I can put it in a bun, but I dislike doing it often, and I'll be damned if I'm going to wear it in a french twist or anything.
:( Please tell me I don't need to cut my hair?

yeah, I've always known if I slashed my hair I would donate to 'locks of love'. But still... I like my hair... my bf likes my hair... :(
Sigh, maybe I'll figure out ways to put parts of it up - I'd prefer that to cutting it. And maybe I'll cut it a few inches.

as long as it's not down past your ass and looks groomed, it's fine.
put it in a bun or a clip if you're uncomfortable, you don't need to cut it. it's not worth it.

sounds like you have a good sense of what's appropriate. i wouldn't worry. cut a couple inches off if you absolutely feel you need to, but there's no need to hack it off to your shoulders.
the one thing i'd say is that you can't be both the girl with long hair and the girl who wears slutty clothes, or the girl who's a flirt. keep everything else in moderation and people won't notice your hair, or will notice it in a good way.

My clothes are far from slutty, and I wouldn't consider myself a flirt at all. Excellent advice.

Pulling it back in a clip would be fine. I have seen plenty of attorneys with long hair, pulled back. I have even seen one male attorney with long hair, pulled back. Other than dressing in business-appropriate attire, don't get in the mode of thinking that you should have to change other aspects of your personal style to fit into Biglaw.
EDIT: The above applies even if your hair is ass-length. However, if you're interviewing you may want to braid it or put it in a bun. If you already have the job, who cares. People in Biglaw are much, much less appearance-conscious than you may think. We are lawyers and spend most of our time in our offices doing work for other lawyers who spend most of their time in their offices. This is not P.R. or any other fashion-forward environment.

How about you just tell us exactly (anatomically) how long your hair is. Right now, it sounds like it definitely should be cut if you don't want to look like an idiot at a firm.

*cries again* Mid-ass length. I've been planning on cutting it to around the small of my back, or bottom of my ribcage, but I hadn't wanted to go any higher. It's not crazy unkempt or anything, when I just let it dry it looks good, but very simple.
There's one senior associate I know at my firm who wears her hair a few inches past her shoulder blades - but she puts the upper part back in a pretty clip everyday. She seems unusual, but my personal opinion is that it looks professional, but I wasn't sure if that was what other people would think...

That is a good length indeed.
OP, bottom of the rib cage is probably about as long as you'd want to go. Mid ass is pretty solidly out of bounds.

ty. I also do not think it looks very odd worn down. Maybe I should rethink this? I have even worn it loose to interviews, although typically I will pull it all pack in a clip.
Hard to imagine mid ass looking good. the ends start looking dry and frayed, I would imagine.

Re clips: are "pretty clips" the best way? I usually get very plain ones, like just a plain bar of black or plain bar of polished wood. Am I being too conservative?

"pretty" to me = silver, maybe a very simple/elegant design. Black would disappear in my hair almost, and if I'm going to wear them I consider it another piece of jewelry - I don't want it to disappear, but it would be in the same taste zone as my earrings (like small silver teardrops or something).
Polished wood sounds very pretty to me. :)

OP post a pic of your hair. I can't imagine someone wearing this look in an office. Are you 4 feet tall?

Remember, she's not working for Vogue. She's in Biglaw. People don't care so much about hair length as long as it's not overtly messy. If she can put her hair back with it not looking messy, no attorney will care about how long or short her hair is.
However, if she's interviewing she may want to cut it to mid-back length, or at least put it up in a bun or braid it.

I wasn't saying that *you* would think people would find it personally objectionable.
Obviously, it's a matter of personal taste as to whether or not you'd find the look ridiculous. I wouldn't, but others might. I couldn't care less about men wearing earrings, women shaving their heads, cowboy boots, flip-flops, Hawaiian shirts or other questionable workplace attire, but some may. If the OP is otherwise professional and turns out good work product, people will stop noticing the hair (if they did so in the first place), but if she wants to wear the hair, she will have to get used to the fact that some people may find the look ridiculous for an office setting. It shouldn't, however, affect the kind of work she gets, or her reviews.

You could wear it up and look professional. However, you might want to consider cutting it because hair that is as long as you described looks out-dated. While you might think it looks good, it probably doesn't. You don't have to cut it really short but you can get stylish cuts that fall a few inches below your shoulders that will probably make you look better. I have similar hair as you (thick, straight hair that is fine in texture.)
This is what my haircut looks like:

Cut your fucking hair, I wont say it again.

Hair past your ass seems kind of unprofessional to me, but I've never worked in a law firm and don't know what the standards are. However, the lawyers I've met have all had their hair up and/or it was no longer than shoulderblade length.
