(A couple of my classmates in law school had this path, and they were nervous wrecks.) The competition's based on endurance/hours-grinding, so persistent dumb people win.
Really, you're a lot more likely to get rich starting out as a biglaw associate than as an IBD analyst. The upside is better for the latter, but the percentage who fail and fall into oblivion is higher. |

I will say that it doesn't take especially good social skills to succeed in banking. I've seen plenty of socially inept losers do just fine in banking, and many likeable people faceplant.
Also, Sat. night is the best time for me to post. I don't really get to post much during the week, with my work commitments and family life. But my wife is out of town, my kids are in bed, and my friends are mostly married and with their families. |

I was pretty pissed, because I've been busting my ass (1900-2300 hours per year) for nine years. I got into a screaming match over it but, surprisingly, wasn't fired.
On Thursday, I was fed up and brought two senior partners into a conversation, wherein I basically told them that if they didn't make me a P, I'd start my own firm and take 2 clients (whom I named) and 5 talented associates (whom I didn't.)
I figured the move would either get me made or fired. Surprisingly, it worked for the better. |
