Alright, I'm typically a beer drinker (Sam Adams) but I would like to add a hard liquor cocktail to my routine for the summer. Nothing girly (martini), fruity (margarita), or childish (whiskey sour/long island ice tea). Please don't suggest wine because that is mostly a dinner drink, cocktails only. Something sophisticated without looking like I'm trying too hard (scotch neat).

Not a bad idea. I love whiskey and this would be better than a sour.

I don't, I usually take whatever the well is. However I am not a fan of Bombay, it has this too-sweet finish that I can't stand.

it's usually best not to make your staple drink something you're going to have to explain to every new bartender. Most of them don't even know how to make a southside these days, keep it simple.

vodka tonic on the rocks. and i know you said you didn't want a martini, but a vodka martini is pretty classic (just vodka & vermouth, stirred).

i personally like whiskey & coke, but that might be too "childish" for you.

I've never had a vodka tonic. Interesting suggestion. Probably worth a try. Coke drinks are okay but they're very sweet.

yea, they are. can only have a couple, not something to drink all night.

if you like vodka at all (personally my favorite hard liquor), you'll probably like a vodka tonic. like most cocktails, it needs to be made with at least a semi-decent vodka - it'll taste like shit if you're using smirnoff, stolichnaya or god forbid popov.

edit: most places will serve it with a slice of lime

Gin and Tonic is too sickly sweet but Gin and Soda works.

The best summer drink is a greyhound: vodka and grapefruit juice

There's nothing girly about a gin martini. A negroni is also acceptable.

i love gin martinis but they come in what is now basically known as a cosmo glass...

also its a high maintenance drink that requires direction. not good for calling out in a crowded bar or appearing laid back

can't endorse it since i haven't had it. i would imagine that it would work fine in place of either of the aforementioned.
