or the AMC 12 in high school? What was your score, and what year (since different scoring formulae have been used in different years)?

I took it junior and senior years. That would be 1998 and 1999. Scored a 128 and 140 respectively.

Yeah, I took both. Junior year I got 7 out of 15 on AIME and barely qualified for the USAMO. Totally bombed it though.

Senior year, I scored 10 out of 15 on AIME, did USAMO and got invited to the camp in Nebraska. But I didn't make the IMO team. The people there were absolutely brilliant.

The most intellectually intensive experience of my life. And no, I'm not exaggerating. You go to seminars on every mathematical topic, ranging from combinatorics to linear algebra, to advanced geometric proofs, etc. A decent number of past IMO participants come over and give talks as well. I still keep in touch with a few of the people I met there.

Cool. What would you say was the key element for doing well on the AHSME? Mainly pure intelligence, or mainly practice with old ASHME problems and stuff? I always thought it was very hard. The best I did was a 105, even though I got As in math classes, 750 SAT Math, etc.

This sounds arrogant, but with AHSME and AIME, I think it's mainly natural intelligence. For the USAMO and IMO, because the proofs are so difficult and you're competing against really smart people, practice becomes important. You need to be able to think creatively with regards to solving these proofs. They're tough as hell.

Yeah, I'm in law school. Doing a joint JD/MBA degree.

I think the time limit is also a big factor. It helps to have a large stock of proof strategies available.

Do you miss math ever?

No; I don't miss math. In college, I started as a math major but took some economics courses and got more interested in finance and making money. But it's all good because law and business school is a joke compared to advanced math, so that training still helps me.

Not at all. I became disillusioned with academia in college. I didn't want to spend my life publishing esoteric articles that very few people care about. And since my parents are not rich, money became a pretty important consideration. Besides, I enjoy my current program.

i'm trying to decide between corporate law and private equity.

i also would love to run for office someday, but i would need to go back to my home state to have a chance of winning. Unfortunately, my home is an absolute TTT, and I would kill myself if I had to go back and live there.

Just curious, do you think the stock market is really a "random walk" and unpredictable, or do you think it's predictable to an extent and more intelligent people can do better than others at investing (without inside information, just looking at historical charts and stuff)?

It's not a total random walk. There are patterns if you look at charts, and you analyze the relationship between volume and volatility. But having said that, a lot of smart people did not foresee this current crisis, and some of the best hedge funds are getting crushed right now.

At the summer camp, what did you all do besides go to math seminars? Any fun stuff, or was it just math all day?

Yeah, I think with the AHSME there's only so much that practice and study can help you. Some of the harder problems require "creative" solutions, so you basically need pure intelligence to do really well.

Nice to know we have a math genius here!

I remember this test. I got somewhere in the 90s. I was always pretty decent at math, but not a good math standardized test taker. Geometry always threw me for a loop.

Some kid the year below me got a 149 though, which was pretty insane. (And he was recognized as one of the top math students in the country, so this made sense).
