There are no layoffs at DPW beyond performance-related decisions taken in the ordinary course.

Obviously in this economy the poorly performing associates are less likely to leave the firm voluntarily so they will layoff more people even if they keep the same standard for performance layoffs.

call it whatever you want. fact of the matter is, i've heard that people are being forced out -- a LOT more people than normal.

Look, this is not hard to understand. In a normal economy, the crappy associates leave on their own because they have other places to go. In this economy, the crappy associates stick around as long as they can because they have nowhere else to go. Hence, law firms do more performance related layoffs. But the point is that the associates who are laid off in this economy are still bad associates who would have been laid off in any other economy if they had happened to stick around.

Obviously. There hasn't been a lower attrition rate in this economy and the bad associates in this economy tend to leave on their own because they have tons of other opportunities, just like before.

In a normal economy, a good number of the best (at the top firms since they usually had pretty good exit options) and a lot of middle performing associates leave as well. So some of these "bad associates" being forced out now are probably more like a normal economy's middle performance associates.

How much longer can DPW be considered a top firm based on selectivity? S&C, Skadden, STB and Cleary are more profitable and seem to have more impressive deal resumes not just now but normally as well (but are less selective at the associate level).

This is the same as the party line from Latham, but somehow that puts us on the deathwatch and generates five threads a day.

I have heard this rumor too.

I'm not surprised. This is the firm that tried to pay no bonus in good times not too long ago.

Fuck them.
