Wolanda Duraldi, mother of LSP sophomore and Kimmel protester Anna P. Mullen, got a call last week from an NYU administrator. She was told that her daughter was suspended from the university and that disciplinary proceedings would start the following week.

But Duraldi isn’t mad; she supports her daughter’s involvement in the radical action at the student center, she told WSN in an interview.

Duraldi’s views mirror those of several other parents of student protesters involved in last week’s occupation of the Kimmel Center.

Gallatin freshman Michael Sandmel’s parents, both NYU alumni, got more warning about their son’s fate. After the University set the 1 a.m. deadline on Thursday evening, Sandmel had a “lengthy conversation” on the phone with his parents to discuss his alternatives, eventually leaving prior to the deadline, avoiding any punishments.

His mother stressed that “ultimately, the decision was his own.”

Sandmel’s father, Charles, works in an investment firm and the family has always discussed fiscal transparency, said Sandmel’s mother.

“This is a young man who has been involved in social justice issues since high school,” she added.

Shawn Moldow, too, told WSN that his son Joseph Moldow, who participated in Take Back NYU's Kimmel occupation, was justified in questioning the lack of budget transparency at NYU.

"My son asked for NYU to disclose their budget. What is there to hide?" Moldow said. "Most other schools are willing to disclose this information."

Moldow was dissatisfied with the University's reaction to the protest.

"It is shameful how an academic administration chooses to shut down and neutralize the voices of our young people," Moldow said.

"I fully understand that a college needs to maintain an orderly environment, as does Joseph, but at the same time I recognize the frustration of students attempting to be heard on various issues, and not being afforded effective channels for having that voice heard," he said.

Suzanne Phillips, mother of CAS junior Drew Phillips, was disappointed in NYU's response to the protesters. Suzanne found out about her son's suspension through a voicemail Drew left on her phone.

"Students have a right to protest, and I think that they are not being given their free speech rights and that the administration obviously does not care what the students think," she said.

Despite their support, Suzanne and her husband, Ronald, are concerned about the possible loss of tuition money and their son's future.

"We'll lose the money we paid for his tuition this year; that's an issue you always have to worry about because it's a big chunk of change," Phillips said.

Drew Phillips has been in close contact with his mother over the past few days.

"She's a mother, she will worry, she's just worried that [the administration is] going to come down harder than they actually should," he said.

She also insists her son did not break the lock leading to the balcony of the MarketPlace.

"Drew is a vegan. He does not destroy anything, especially people," she said, adding, "I think the individuals in charge of destroying the property should be charged.”

Sarah Mullen continues to say in constant contact with her parents.

"They're both supportive, clearly concerned, but I think they know by now that they've raised me right,” she said. “They think I'm an adult and able to make the right decisions in this situation.”
