Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed[6] was born on October 31, 1984, in Rochester Hills, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, to Egyptian immigrant parents.[7][8][9] He was raised in southeast Michigan. His father, Mohamed El-Sayed, was raised in Alexandria, Egypt, and immigrated to the United States to pursue a PhD at Wayne State University.[10][11] His mother, Fatten El-Komy, is a nurse practitioner in Missouri.[12] His parents divorced when he was three years old.[13] He was subsequently raised in the Detroit area by his father and stepmother, Jacqueline El-Sayed (née Johnson), a native of Gratiot County, Michigan. Both his father and stepmother are mechanical engineers,[14] and his father was a professor of mechanical engineering at Kettering University in Flint and also an imam.[15]
