Deadly shooting in Loop leaves 1 killed, 1 hurt; heavy police presence in area
A deadly shooting investigation was unfolding steps away from the Chicago Theatre in the Loop, with one man killed and another injured as a heavy police presence remained at the scene.
According to Chicago police, two men were found about 2:39 a.m. in the 0-100 block of East Lake Street with gunshot wounds. One of the men was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The other man, 38, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was also transported to a nearby hospital. He was last listed in fair condition, police said.
No other injuries were reported. The circumstances surrounding the shooting were under investigation, police said.
As of 6:30 a.m., multiple officers and investigators remained at the scene, with police tape blocking off parts of the street and sidewalk near State and Lake Streets.
Yellow evidence markers could be seen lining parts of the sidewalk as officers investigated.
"Usually that indicates the amount of shell casings," NBC 5 reporter Lisa Chavarria said.
Chavarria added that the area was becoming busy with workers and commuters as they were heading to their offices.
The incident comes two days after another shooting blocks away inside a 7-Eleven convenience store left two people injured.
