The captain responded by abruptly pulling back on the control column, followed by increasing thrust to 75% power, instead of lowering the nose and applying full power, which was the proper stall-recovery technique.

They flew into a convective cell with 45,000+ ft ceilings. There was heavy precipitation, which accumulated on the control surfaces as ice. As a consequence, they lost lift and, ultimately, control. This was not recoverable.

Why would people rich enough to own this jet not hire a captain? Do yacht owners drive their own boat? I don't understand this weird mentality of flying around a bunch of friends because it's an airplane

all sorts of rich people fly small aircraft, pilot boats just smaller than motor yachts, and race fast cars - all at considerable personal risk. yolo my brother
Ice builds up, changing the shape of the wing so it can no longer produce lift. The plane goes into a stall, which they can't recover from if the control surfaces are frozen or like in this case the plane nosedives and goes so fast that they can't steer it without ripping off the controls. One of the frames from the crash video appears to show the horizontal stabilizer completely ripped off which means the pilots no longer had control of the plane's attitude and literally could not pull up because the elevators were torn off.
They were flying into a storm. If you listened to the ATC audio, they were in -47 degrees - F/C doesn't matter, they're the same at that temp which is pretty kooky - and an updraft was pushing moist Florida air up into the clouds. Pilots are supposed to avoid for this reason, but looking at the radar from the time of the crash they didn't have a lot of good options. Probably should have scrubbed the flight or at least given the storm a much wider berth.

cr ty. appreciate the explanation. you're right i didn't listen to every second of the tape, but i also don't have the background to interpret all of the content. anyway pretty sad accident for them, just a crazy thing to see online
If you’re going extremely fast just pull up a little. I realize she was also Spinning but jfc. Seems like she was pretty high up. Did the plane not have Wings?
The Buffalo crash I just watched was more of a challenge because they fucked up at like 2000 ft and went below stall speed.
Apparently it’s much easier to recover from a stall at 2,000 feet because you’re going slower. If you ice and dive at 30,000 then stuff can immediately brake like rudder control or instruments or whatever and make it uncontrollable because the plane is going too fast and if if you pull up the whole plane would disintegrate

Brief scan on reddit says this type is particularly susceptible to iceing, they flew through tstorms called in they were having ice issues, control surfaced must have been locked up w ice, plane got into an overspeed situation in a nose down attitude and when they tried to regain control they snapped the stab off at which point it was unrecoverable and basically uncontrollable.

Also I'm seeing people online saying don't listen to the ATC audio like it's so horrible. It didn't affect me at all, am I dead inside. I think people should frequently limit test their comfort zone. There are horrors all around us

People shelter themselves from The Truth which is why everyone can seem so bewilderingly positive and optimistic to book-reading intellectuals and other assorted outcasts and Losers.
doesn't mean you're dead inside and i wouldn't expect everyone to be affected but i found it disturbing. it reminds me of a lisa rowe (iirc) thread with a video of the crowd witnessing the Challenger explosion where you see them (mostly family/friends/students of the crew) realize what happened. it's not gory, you're not hearing/seeing someone dying, but you're witnessing the moment of realization of something terrible.

I’d rather hear the calming recitation of a Mohammedan prayer or chant, even if it left the cause of my imminent death ambiguous, than listen to all that noise. Embarrassing.
