I heard this guy on NPR.
He seems way too ingratiating towards the would-be "elite" (dopey NPR correspondents, sociology ptofessors, etc).
Why "hillbilly"? Why the self-denigration.
Sam Dickson makes the point that southerners and blue-collar whites have debased themselves by embracing the caricaturizations "redneck" and "white trash", etc.

Why would he go back to be among real hillbillies. He escaped his hillbilly roots and did summa at tOSU, marine corps in iraq, Yale law, clerkship, venture cap.

"It is one of the great failures of recent political history that the Republican Party was too often unable to disconnect legitimate political disagreements from the fact that the president himself is an admirable man."
So fucking disingenuous. What he doesn't address is that any criticism of Obama is immediately categorized as racist. The Shitlib media has conditioned the public to equate criticism of a black person with racism.

because he is pushing a disingenuous, globcap-friendly just-so-story about rural white poverty that glosses over the role of the rat-faced man, of social decohesion and its relation to boomers/the '65 immigration act/etc., and of anything that threatens to so much as give corporate interests a wary eye.
he's clearly ingratiating himself with the power structures using "his people" as props to do so.
why the fuck should we think anything good about that?

...using "his people" as props to do so.
That is what pisses me the fuck off. He has no interest in actually helping these people, he just wants to use them to ingratiate himself to coastal elite shitlibs and then slither into Congress.

I knew too many people like him at my law school -- wants to be in politics and is crafting his own personal story so it's just so. He's "moving to Ohio" i.e. to DC while his wife clerks for SCOTUS and he can pop back there from time to time before she finishes clerking and joins Jones Day in Cleveland or Columbus. He may be a nice guy and all but I don't find his stuff very compelling.
