wtf?!
So she's being incredibly bitchy about it. We've been dating for a couple years now, and went out the other day to kind of browse rings.
We went to Tiffany and they had this ring for about $30k. We started talking about it and apparently she thinks this is a good minimum to spend. I really know nothing about this.

in full disclosure, I have no idea about rings or ring prices, but ite 30K is re-donk-culous. There have to be other places where you can get the 30K value for less, like bluenile.com.

If you don't see the symbolism attached to an engagement ring, you are truly stupid and unready for marriage.
It's a pivotal moment in certain stupid peoples' lives. If you don't treat the moment as pivotal and try to economize the most "important day of your life" than you ain't so smart.
I wouldn't get married in the first place but my rationale is principled rather than pragmatic.

There is just something odd about saying marriage and engagement rings are both for retards but if you are going to marry a retard you better capitulate to their stupidity.
Date: April 11th, 2009 10:53 AM Author: Cream tanning salon
Do you need to oversimplify something that's already oversimplifed?
Don't get married at all. That's my advice. The myth of marital happiness is widespread in Western countries.
But most of you don't take the myth head on and prefer to blast your girlfriends. The capitulation of your girlfriend to the myth has nothing to do with the myth.

"But most of you don't take the myth head on and prefer to blast your girlfriends. The capitulation of your girlfriend to the myth has nothing to do with the myth. "
It seems there two possible myths: the myth of marriage and the myth you're supposed to spend x on a ring. The second is more vapid and idiotic, and you can fall for one but not the other.

She wants a material sign of his faith in the relationship. He's a materialistic who asks her to get a boob job every second weekend.
Where's the big surprise that she wants a big engagement ring? All he brings to the relationship is money. She wants a monetary expression. So fucking express yourself already....

I may be naive in the ways of straight marriage, but don't you then have to buy her another ring, the wedding ring?? Is that ring cheaper, or are you just going to have to turn around & spend another $30K on her?
Date: April 11th, 2009 10:53 AM Author: Aqua Bateful Native
I'm a woman. And because I am good and wise, I would not ask my SO to spend $30k on an engagement ring. In fact, I would specifically advise him to be as cheap as possible without pushing us out of our existing social circles.
Date: April 11th, 2009 10:55 AM Author: Cream tanning salon
So what? You're already freaked out about "SOCIAL CIRCLES".
Give me a break.
If you care about stupid kinds of stuff like marriage, rings, and social circles, then care about the money spent on it. Be consistent in your stupidity.

Her point is a fair one, her fiance wouldn't want to humiliate her (and indirectly himself) by buying a ring that is inadequate compared with her peers' rings.

Frankly, my mind was only on the size of the rock. I swear to you, I would rather have a simulant than an actual diamond. I view jewelry as the biggest waste of money that ever was. People who think they can tell between a diamond and a diamond simulant all should be herded up and shot for perpetuating such a grand waste of money and lives.
Date: April 11th, 2009 11:01 AM Author: Coiffed Crotch Plaza
But a simulated diamond is artificial. It doesn't have the same inherent value as a natural stone that has been produced as the result of aeons of geological action.

i have, but it's still a roundabout argument. I think women just want the prestige of an expensive ring, not because they view the ring as a fiscally responsible investment, but because they're self centered whores.

Any guy who calls his fiancee a self -centered whore shouldn't be getting married for reasons that have nothing to do with his fiancee. Is that so complicated moron?

You're definitely not a woman because a woman wouldn't talk this way. Any guy who calls his fiancee a whore needs mental help more than marriage. Get a psychiatrist.

It has potential. Anne Wickleby is forced into a loveless marriage with the caddish Upton Frobisher. Frobisher resents being forced by his father to marry beneath him for money and so humiliates her with a mere 200 pound engagement ring. Anne cannot face Society after her shaming and withdraws to her family's country estate. Fortunately her true love, the dashing Captain Smythe, comes to her rescue, kills Frobisher in a duel and proposes to her with a suitable 3000 pound ring. They live happily ever after.

The stupid woman seems to think their love is SPECIAL and requires a SPECIAL ring. Precious! My precious!
She's stupid and deluded, but work with her. Their love is hackneyed and trite. Everyone does the stupid things she does. But work with her.
If you get her the ring that fits her deluded fantasy of the relationship he might keep her. If he punctures her fantasy of their "specialness" now then he can start losing her.
Date: April 11th, 2009 11:12 AM Author: Cream tanning salon
Because they're "SPECIAL" and everyone else is not "SPECIAL." Marriage is a PIVOTAL point for her and she won't get a house for a few years as a result.
If he loves her, work with her. If he doesn't love her, he shouldn't have proposed in the first place.

Fuck.
Okay, update.
I've been on the phone with her for a while, talking about this ring business. Apparently, she is willing to come down to $25k, assuming the ring is at least 2.5 carats.
I told her $30k is too much and she accused me of not loving her. I told her that I do love her and want to marry her and if I need to buy that ring to show her than I will.
Date: April 11th, 2009 11:14 AM Author: stirring volcanic crater locale
Unreasonable is demanding that a specific amount of money be spent on a luxury that doesn't have a shared value or purpose. Other than receiving credit from passersby or girlfriends she chooses to discuss the glory of this ring with, you get nothing out of it other than a money-grubbing wife. Sorry dood.
Date: April 11th, 2009 11:19 AM Author: unhinged parlour
Well, maybe I misspoke. She didn't actually SAY $30k, but she said it would be impossible to find the ring that she wanted for less, unless we got something smaller at first and added the wedding band when we get married.
I showed her some bluenile stuff and she doesn't want anything that's from a wholesaler-type place. She really wants the Tiffany ring.
Date: April 11th, 2009 12:23 PM Author: lilac kitty cat
It's not Tiffany & Co vs wholesalers. There are plenty of respectable independent jewelers who are a big step above Blue Nile, but still sell at reasonable prices.
You should show how much you love her by designing her ring. Check out pricescope.com and look into working with a special jeweler.

You don't understand how important marriage is to many women. Many women have been dreaming about and planning for their big day since about the age of 6. She will have a particular engagement ring in mind and to wantonly deprive her of that just to save a few bucks seems shortsighted to me.

No. I totally agree. I know a LOT of spoiled princesses.
Someone whose identity I shall not reveal has a father who bought her a new piece of of diamond jewelry for Valentine's Day from the time she was 11 until she left home for school.
Such a woman should be projected to have pretty high expectations of whatever engagement ring she eventually tricks some poor sucker into buying for her.

I would honestly laugh in her face and tell her to go fuck herself. Your main reason for getting it is because she has had it picked out forever? Who gives a shit, i've liked Ferrari's since forever but it doesn't mean price isn't a consideration when purchasing something

First of all, something like this doesn't come out of nowhere. A cool, down-to-earth girl will not suddenly demand a 30,000 engagement ring. You know what you're getting into with these types, which is why this is flame. And her desire for this ring has nothing to do with the "design" of the ring, it has all to do with the cash
Date: April 11th, 2009 11:54 AM Author: Adventurous chest-beating school ape

I don't have an ideal ring in mind. The only thing I know for sure is that I will not demand anything and won't ask for anything extravagant.
I'd probably want a diamond, sapphires don't really sparkle and I like sparkle. maybe a diamond with side sapphires would be cool though. I'd be cool with an heirloom ring, not sure about the pawnshop idea.

If a woman is a lawyer/doctor/professional making $150k+ she is very much entitled to a $30k engagement ring because she could afford to spend that on herself.
If she is going to be your stay at home mom or working some miserable public service job while you make the real $$$, you should buy her a ring you are comfortable buying.
