What's funny is how he came to learn to Japanese in the first place. He had originally been doing some kind of PhD research in India, and he was fluent in Hindi or something. He said he was riding the train one day and he watched a guy beat his wife in public for the billionth time. He said "I'd been watching this happen nonstop for years but that day I decided it would be my last." He said he left India, forgot all about it, and started learning Japanese.
