It doesn’t have to be $250, but you do need a burr grinder to make a consistent grind. A burr grinder is a precise machine, with machine cut parts, and having the proper grind is the third most important part of coffee quality.
It will last a long time and you will use every day, so very well worth it. Paid $99 for mine about a decade ago.
