They revamped the characters after season 1-- Picard was more of a no nonsense military man at the start-- but you can basically watch the episodes from season 2 to 7 in any order and not notice the differences. Contrast with more recently concluded scifi epics like The Expanse, if you watched episodes out of order it would be immediately obvious.
