'He was like a really chill guy' | Neighbor shocked to learn friend is suspect in Kickapoo shooting after FBI agents raid his apartment

SAN ANTONIO — New details have emerged about how authorities captured 34-year-old Keryan Jones, the suspect in the deadly Kickapoo Casino shooting that left two people dead and five others injured.

After allegedly opening fire at the casino, Jones managed to pass through a border checkpoint and into Wilson County. His escape was short-lived.

Authorities say Texas DPS troopers chased Jones to a Circle K gas station in Stockdale just before 8 a.m. Sunday morning. Following a brief pursuit, officers fired at Jones' truck, partially disabling the vehicle. He continued driving before being taken down with a taser.

Sonya Pruski, who lives on a nearby farm, said she received an alert from a Facebook friend monitoring police scanners, warning her to stay inside.

“He was like, ‘Just in case they run… be aware.’ And I was like, ‘We’re aware. We’re very aware,’” Pruski said. “So adrenaline’s going.”

Hours later, FBI agents executed a federal search warrant at Jones’ apartment on Patricia Drive, near Castle Hills.

Neighbors described the dramatic scene as agents used a loudspeaker to command occupants to come out with their hands up, followed by the sound of a flashbang and SWAT officers entering the building.

Lyndi Gowen, who lives in the complex, was home at the time with her father and newborn baby.

“I was scared. I was crying,” Gowen said. “My dad was standing in front of me because we didn’t know if any stray bullets would come through, if somebody came out guns blazing.”

Gowen said she and her boyfriend knew Jones personally and considered him a friend. She described him as quiet and kind, often letting their dogs play together.

“He was like a really chill guy. I mean, he seemed really nice,” she said. “I think I know he’s ex-military, but he just seemed like a quiet, hardworking guy. But I guess not.”

Meanwhile, back in San Antonio, two of the casino shooting victims were flown to University Hospital. One has since been released, while the other remains in serious condition. The conditions of the remaining victims are still unknown.

Authorities have not yet released details about Jones’ motive. The investigation is ongoing.
