Self-employed and some other types of workers do actually have about half go to taxes depending on the state. But most proles aren't in that category.

good point on the self-employment tax. SS taxes were lower until like 1982. They had to raise taxes as Gen Xers started their first jobs haha.

Raymond makes like 35000k and complains about this constantly for some reason. Also he can’t sell his house even though it has “low property taxes” (prole wisdom).

I can only take him in small af doses. He was on track to make 80,000k+ before views fell off.

idk why he has the defeatist attitude btw. Doing front-end web design seems like a job you could find wfh jobs in. He doesn't send out 1000k resumes and bomb 50 interviews. He just says "it's impossible to get a job. I'm going to work at a grocery store." Like he wants to lean into being a Scummy middle aged Curmudgeon for some reason.

Wasn’t he straight up Fired though? Most companies will want a reference from previous employer or something similar, unless it’s some Scumbag “LLC”.

Idk OYT, I thought nobody checked references anymore other than to call the Employer and confirm Dates of Employment. Occasionally there are random boomers who actually check references like it's 1978.

also in the past I've given references that were just Fellow Losers who were direct supervisors although the companies' management writ large usually hated me by the time I left iirc.

He was basically in trouble for being mean to a Woman (his Better bc of Clique law), but it wasn't obvious to me that he was about to be fired. iirc the story he gave was that he said he was Done and unplugged his laptop and put it in the Corner and turned it off, then made a video in his backyard.

Between federal income tax, state income tax, fica taxes, property tax, sales tax, and various tolls and fees, more than half my money goes to taxes (and other assorted government fees).

Yeah, as a self-employedmo, I pay 15% in self-employment tax and then 22% in federal income tax and about 5% in state income tax. So I'm already just barely under 50% in taxes before I even include property tax and sales tax. It's probably even worse for higher earners in high tax states.

Technically, I think you could lose money if you got a raise that pushed your AGI just above $23,000. The additional income probably wouldn't cover the loss of 30% of the Saver's Credit. Sure, most people who earn $23k aren't contributing to tax-advantaged retirement accounts anyway. But I wanted to be a smartass and show that it is technically possible.
