18:11 — Observed assistant manager’s new Mercedes GLC in the employee lot. Temporary plates. She is 27.
18:14 — Conducted perimeter walk and confirmed cart corral was overflowing.
18:22 — Assistant manager arrived through employee entrance carrying an iced coffee and stated traffic had been “insane.”
18:23 — She ran her hand through approximately four inches of completely intact hair while explaining this.
I documented the late arrival because documentation is the entire point of having standards.
19:05 — Tabitha reviewed my note, crossed out the word “violation,” wrote “coaching opportunity,” initialed it, and handed it back to me with a grin.
I asked what objective distinction existed between a documented attendance violation and a “coaching opportunity.”
She pointed to the attendance policy and said, “Manager discretion.”
I am also a manager.
No further clarification was provided.
Later I caught my reflection in the freezer door under the fluorescent lighting and spent several minutes determining whether the apparent recession at the temples was merely distortion from the glass.
It was difficult to tell.
The Mercedes was still outside when I left.
