Have to get past this very narrow isthmus to even enter Crimea. The Germans managed to do it with a frontal attack in 1941, but they weren't facing GRAD batteries and the like. There hasn't been a single instance in this war when Ukraine captured territory with a massive frontal attack on a well-defended position. Just the opposite, in fact - the most destructive Russian videos I've seen have been when the Ukrainians tried to do so and had GRADs devastate their lines.

Agree, most likely trying to make Russia station troops there- same as with Russia's threatened invasion from Belarus.

I expect Western nations will strongly discourage them from even trying to invade Crimea out of fear of Putin using nukes. I don't think he'd even have to use them, though- with a 3 mile wide isthmus and all the modern defensive tools at Russia's disposal.

This is in February: https://theintercept.com/2022/02/26/ukraine-russia-invasion-conscription/

"The conscriptions, reluctant or not, are part of a broad, societywide mobilization by Ukraine to fend off a vastly superior Russian military force."

Now women are being "mobilized": https://visitukraine.today/blog/548/military-registration-of-women-from-october-1-will-women-be-called-up-for-military-service

Pretending that there's no conscription in Ukraine is totally nuts. I know Ukrainians that fled to avoid conscription.

They are calling up reservists. You have to know this is different than a mobilization (i.e. rounding up and forcing completely untrained men and sending them to the front lines) which is what Russia is doing.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-starts-drafting-reservists-aged-18-60-after-presidents-order-2022-02-23/

In America what we mean by draft is the latter and not simply calling up reservists.

If you are suggesting that Ukraine is drafting untrained civilians and sending them into combat, then you are just wrong. This isn't happening.

Russia is also "only calling up reservists." The problem is that pretty much everyone is a "reservist" in both of these countries.

They are keeping crimea on the table as a bargaining chip. make russia work for every inch of land they will inevitably take.

Crimea can't be held militarily if the Kerch Bridge is cut and the land bridge via Donbas is cut. All those troops need more supplies than can be economically delivered by ferries and airlifts.

That said, it is still an unlikely outcome at the moment.

Ukraine seems to be keeping the Russians guessing as to what they will got first

they could pressure Crimea directly to start and make the Russians divert a ton of troops and resources (which might already be happening with trenches and such being built in Crimea)

or they could make a go for Melitopol to severely diminish the landbridge and this draw resources to there, which would again open up Crimea to more attacks

either way the ball is definitely in Ukraine’s court and these lame infrastructure attacks won’t alter that

exactly. No one is suggesting Ukraine is going to ram 100k troops down a 3mile wide lane. Ukraine could get to that 3mile wide lane though, block it, take out the Kerch bridge, and just wait until Russia decides Crimera isn't work it (hint, it isn't).

Pumo: "Nice strawman, but no one seriously suggests or think they're going to do that because Ukrainemos aren't total gullible retards, unlike XO Putintar--"

Crowd of 105-IQ XO 'Slava Ukraini!!!' Poasters (0% of whom actually fight to Ukraine): "We're 100% taking Crimea back, wtf are you talking about? That's basically a foregone conclusion at this point and btw then we're going to march on Moscow... tick tock..."

To be fair,

I'm not a "pro-Moscowmo," I don't give a shit about Russia and never poasted about it even once before the war started. When Putin dies, I will feel nothing. I only care because this conflict because Ukraine is undeniably 10000% (((Globohomo))), and an enemy of an enemy is, at least temporarily, a friend. Jews seems absolutely seething mad about what Russia is doing, so therefore good job Russia.

Thanks for asking.

To be fair,

You got me! Me, an American with absolutely no ties to Russia, hoping that Russia wins to stick it to (((Globohomo))) but also sanely refusing to commit a crime by getting on an airplane and going halfway around the world to join this scuffle that involves two groups of people I have literally zero connection with, in a foreign country I have never set foot in, that speaks a foreign language I don't know a word of is, exactly the same dynamic as TDNW -- a self-described "Ukrainian Patriot" and allegedly a 30-something jacked and alpha ex-military guy who has literally lived in Keev (and still does) for the last decade and who spends 6+ hours every single day without exception obsessively poasting about this war because he is sooooooooooo deeply invested in Ukraine winning -- refusing to pick up one of the many firearms he currently owns in that very country and jump in a car and legally travel a hundred miles or whatever to help his fellow patriots to protect his beloved homeland that is currently being invaded. Same thing!

You got me bro. I am "pwned," as the kids say.

2 posts ago, TBF is pro-Russia because he is anti-America. Now he's an "American" and therefore uninterested but still rooting against America's clear interest in Ukraine's victory.

2 posts ago, TBF demands that a "crowd" of pro-Ukraine posters enlist in the Ukrainian army. Now his point is just limited to 1 poster who self-identifies as a ukrainian patriot.

The "pro-Russian" position and the pro-Ukrainian position aren't equivalent. The former is merely "the US and West should stay out of this." No one is suggesting we should be sending troops and equipment to Russia. Meanwhile, the pro-Ukraine modern neo-libs and neo-cons support the US sending hundreds of billions to Ukraine, along with US "trainers" and "volunteers" to fight Russia.

Therefore, it is entirely legit to ask why a pro-Ukrainian isn't actually fighting. Meanwhile, asking a "pro-Russian" is dumb. It would be illegal for any of us to volunteer to fight for Russia.

...I openly admit that I don't know anything about something and thus don't have an opinion on it (which is something I have done regularly on XO for years even though it gets ignored by Pumos odd case)... and then...

..."Oh look, TBF is pulling his stupid 'I don't care I'm above it' schtick, what a faggot we should all hate him for doing that shit."

Almost like it's not really about what I say when it comes to my (((XO detractors))), because I literally cannot possibly give a "correct" answer on anything in (((their))) eyes.

Almost like (((they))) have just tried to set up a "Heads TBF loses, tails TBF also loses" situation because (((they))) viscerally hate me for reasons that have very little to do with my specific views on any given specific socio-political issue.

Almost. Haha, yeah.

PS: But I'm definitely the crazy one who is constantly operating in bad faith on XO, not them. ;)

As I stated, Ukraine has never successfully attacked a heavily-fortified Russian position with a frontal attack. And there's no other way to get through the 3-mile wide isthmus without a frontal attack. Manstein tried like crazy to find some other way in 1941 but he eventually concluded there was no other way.

The Ukrainian successes in this war have been all about applying pressure through HIMARS and the like until Russia leaves or almost leaves a particular area by its own accord. That won't happen with Crimea. They will have to get through the isthmus, which will be one of the most heavily-mined and defended places on earth if it becomes threatened.

If they get further south in Kherson province those positions will be in HIMARS range. And the isolation of crimea is a double-edged sword. It's also hard to supply a large presence there if the two main roads leading to it are under UKR fire control.
