Why are Redditors so poor? You don't see this obsession with cheapness and deals on X or 4chan. You do see it on TikTok, admittedly.

XO answer: it's because they're tautologically poor. To be poor is to be a redditor, to be a redditor is to be poor

real answer: it's because subreddits group all of these cheapskate minmaxers into single forums (e.g. /r/CreditCards, /r/Turo). Twitter and 4chan don't have all of these people in one place because it's just a chaos of general discussion

I haven’t done the math but I’m pretty sure mine has more than paid for itself and then some over the past few years. I’ve been able to fly my family of 4 entirely on points every year or so, paying $500 per year for $3000 worth of flights obviously makes sense. Not to mention money saved on dining in airports. This 45% raise really sucks though. May need to look at other cards.

Arguably worth it if you are someone who travels every week between airports with Chase lounges AND you were already paying for Apple TV or something. Otherwise definitely not worth it (same with Amex btw).

you have to give them credit, this is pretty much explicitly crafted to appeal to the sort of person who thinks they're getting some huge deal because the value of all the discounts in aggregate is 50% more than the annual fee or whatever. "yes, that $120 for Peloton and $250 for Apple TV credits totally pushes it over the edge, never mind the fact that I wouldn't sign up for these in the first place otherwise"

right but that was xos original definition of "prole". it was a huge prole tell to not understand this back in the day. youd have poasters swooping in and screaming at you for saying that pelotons are prole when, in fact, they were the proles the whole time.

One of my cards had a special concierge line for VIP dining and travel experiences. I knew it was fraud but I called it once ... after a million voice menus, I got to an ESL turd who didn't know wtf I was talking about and eventually was just like "uh there's nothing available my apologies saar there is a brief survey about your experience." Very humiliating for me and a totally worthless waste.

When I was in my early 20s, the AmEx concierge line was pretty good. I was able to get 4th row center tickets for a couple musicals. These are arguably the best seats. Nowadays it's just some ESL pajeet telling you to use opentable

Just got an offer in the mail for Amex gold biz. 395 per annum, 200k points after 15k spend. Might do this but I can’t figure out if I’m barred from the points cause I already had 100k from the plat card.

This is a weird way of looking at CCs. I don't have either CSR or Amex Platinum but I have the United Club and Bonvoy Brilliant Amex (between the two of them I have both Priority Pass and United Lounge Access, so no need for another ultra expensive card). You pick whatever fits your travel needs and where you can use your rewards the best.

yeah i'm out. i got it right out of the gate like 10 years ago. i gave up the amex platinum a couple years ago. these things are a total rip off unless you're RSF or a business traveler. the big points bonuses only come from using their portals which are always way more expensive than everywhere else. and the couponing aspect is gay and annoying. i just want lounge access and some useful bonus categories (gas groceries restaurants flights). i never stay in hotels so that entire angle is useless to me.

Even if full of prole point collectors, the lounges are a spa compared to the Spirit Air gates where hoards of bus folk are sleeping on floors next to the sole working outlet while their 3 kids are running around like feral animals

Airports are inherently trashy as fuck these days. So lounges are the only oasis of order from the total anarchy of a modern US terminal

Depends on what you're going for. Do you travel a lot? Do you care about elite status at hotels/airlines and/or lounge access? Do you eat out a lot? Do you care if you get miles vs as much cash back as possible? There are cards with no annual fee that just give you 2% cash back on everything.

amex plat

- $200 credits for flight is easy, just use it to pay for upgrades to economy preferred, etc

- $199 clear credit - renew my/family's clear account, this one has saved my ass once when there was a massive fucking line at the airport security. ever since then, i've learned to appreciate the benefit for those occasions

- $100 for saks, i buy my wife an expensive pair of panties from saks every 6 months

- $240/yr digital credit i use for hulu/hbomax/disney+

right there i have my annual fee back

in addition i get

- walmart plus (which also gets me paramount+), great for free home delivery from a store i don't want to step into

- amex lounge + delta lounge (if i'm traveling on delta, which is rare so the quota doesn't impact me) + priority pass

- various statement credits you activate (e.g. saved $50 on sunglasses, $100 when ordering a dell for my parents, etc)

- $20 for VERY good primary car rental insurance, regardless of # of days of rental.

- global entry fee comp'd whenever it is renewed

All of these elite cards have some credits and which card you get entirely depends on which of these credits you'll actually use. With my Bonvoy Brilliant it is $300 in dining credits which is super easy. That plus the free night up to 85k points comps the entire fee. On top of that I get priority pass, platinum elite status, etc. All of my chase cards give me at least $10/month Instacart credits and I use Instacart all the time. For the United Club card it is $20/month, so that's $240 right there. They also give $150 in ride share credits (I fund an account that my au pair uses). On top of that I get club access.

My deal with my job is that they let me move away and work remote except for once a month where I'm on the hook for traveling back to the office. With CCs I get elite status which lets me get 4pm checkout for free (invaluable), can match with executive elite with the car rental (so I'm always in some German luxury car for cheap), and can use the lounge with United (and I cover the annual fee with miles anyway). The points generated by my CC mean that I haven't paid with cash for my hotel stays at all. I also have a few lesser cards like the IHG elite card and a second Marriott CC because the free day is always worth more to me than the annual fee ($95 in both cases). Also, for personal travel I always have my very large dog with me which means that I prefer Kimptons when possible. Today my au pair is traveling back and needed a place to stay so I used my points to get a room for her too.

If you travel a lot these things make a huge difference. Back when I didn't travel much I didn't bother with these cards.

Late checkout actually does have a value. It's less than booking one more night, though.

Booking an extra night is very expensive and almost never of value to me (I usually only book 2 nights so this would add 50% of the cost, plus I never need more than 4pm checkout because I'm flying out that evening). And, of course, the late checkout is free - but without it I would either need to checkout in the AM before heading to the office and then leaving bags at the front and not easily being able to change before heading to the airport or pay for an extra night.

I have the Amazon card. It's $0 per year. I apparently get 6% back on Amazon, 2% on hotels and restaurants. This money just appears on my Amazon account and i just click a toggle when i want to use it.

I have no clue how people fork over $800 in order to hope to make it back by piecing together 5 different $5 Doordash coupons that probably have a milliion different rules and exclusions.

The biggest "prize" for all their efforts is to sit in a room at an airport with other people who get their self-validation from sitting in a special room at the airport.

They’re travel cards. If you don’t travel a ton, they aren’t worth it.

Think about a consultant or other business traveler who does multiple flights per week. The lounge access and status with airlines, hotels and rental cars makes a huge difference in quality of life. Yeah lounges aren’t amazing or anything but they are better than sitting in the terminal which is zoo and having to stand in long lines to buy overpriced shit airport food.

Lounges have become TTT AF especially AMEX. You need 75k spend to bring a guest unless they have an AU card. They need to make it 75k spend for thr cardholder to be able to enter.

I truly do not understand being well off enough to pay that fee and spend enough on the card to get benefits but putting your time into gaming out how to get a pittance in free benefits from a credit card

everyone here is overstating the effort this shit takes. you dont need to track the "offers" they put out to get value from the card through normal use. just collect the points and the automatic credits and it pays for itself if you spend enough.

CR and for example the Citi AA card counts every $1 as at least 1 LP so you can retain top tier status with 100% spend if you so desire.

this thread is so autistic it's unreal. people listing the benefits to conclude it's "not worth it" and "who has the time for this!?". the time it took someone to list the benefits out by hand is more than i'll spend min/maxing the card. the $300 travel credit is automatic, so if you book a couple restaurants, use doordash and lyft you're already almost all the way there. and the lounge takes care of the rest, which is the big draw.

lmfao @ xoxo min/maxers eating at the gate with a bagged lunch scoffing at the wasteful loungemos. why travel for pleasure at all then? you could save even more money if you just stayed home and poasted. this is for people where $1000 isn't a big deal, and the convenience and luxury is well worth the cost.

these cards are successful which is why the amex lounges are so packed other companies are getting into the ultra premium category. yet autistic contrarian xoxoers are nebbishly calculating that ackshually if you bring some ramen to the airport instead of going to the loungue you'll save a couple hundred bucks.

you're the only one saying that and you've said it multiple times itt with no engagement.

we get it -- you have six fig spend and feel you should be entitled to some prestigious treat for that. but amex and chase are commercial companies and not in the business of operating lounges for the less than 1% of premium cardholders. if you want that experience start flying private. if you're flying commercial with the rest of us prole roaches you're in no position to complain exclusivity,.

i keep an autistic spreadsheet where i estimate the benefit of my amex platinum each year. the benefits do outweigh the cost BUT the most advertised and desirable benefit, centurion lounge access and delta skyclub access are virtually worthless and unpleasant due to overcrowding and waits

that means $225 profit each year ($695 fee - schwab brokerage credit, digital streaming, sakes, airline fee credit, and uber eats) feels like i'm buying shit i don't need

i'd probably be happier eating fast food or homemade sandwiches at an empty gate

i canceled my plat after my last trip because the lounge has become too crowded and usually theres a wait. hopefully the new lounges from cards like this will balance things out.

This shit reminds me of those prole coupon books they had in the 80s and early 90s.

https://i.redd.it/uknlw20n24ee1.png

They would say "this book has a $3,000" value, but you'd have to spend $30,000 on the goods and services to ever save that.

With that said, I'm an Amexmo and never have an issue getting value for the fees I pay. I have the platinum and delta reserve. Platinum gets you way more miles (5x) that can be used on other airlines and for good hotels. It also gets you centurion lounge access, priority pass, $15/month on Uber, $200 in airline fees, and a monthly Hulu subscription. Delta reserve gets me platinum status, 4 domestic upgrades, and a companion fare. I fly a lot and book a lot of family trips by air so it's worth it to have both and a regular chase sapphire for places that don't take amex.

I went to an airport lounge at Ontario Airport recently and it was depressing as fuck. Like they built a fake airport lounge on a Hollywood set. It was more crowded than a public library and 2 Hispanic women trying to squeeze by cleaning up everyone's trash. I don't know how they stayed awake for a full shift.

This is getting absurd. Just make it no lounge access unless you spend $100k on the card or something.

I apparently have access to some of these Chase lounges but I never have the time to go to them before the flight (don't usually have flights with layovers) or they're not in the terminal I happen to be in or it's out of my way, and I just never end up bothering to go.

Cr. I rarely go. For work who cares - pay a premium not to have layovers - and for vacation one of my top criteria is somewhere we can go with a direct flight.

The last few times I’ve wanted to go to one, there’s a line of 15-20 other CSRcucks standing there waiting for their free carrot sticks and tablespoon of hummus.

I went once recently and the only one open for Priority Pass was Virgin at SFO toward closing and it was laughably ghetto - interchangeable with the gate and I should have just bought some canned beers and sat at the gate.
