Retiring from your job is something you do when you’re 70-75 years old in my opinion.

Who wants to be retired at 55?

I would gladly retire at 55 if I could afford it. We had kids younger and will be finished paying for college by then hopefully/presumably, but having to buy a house younger and pay for all the kid bullshit cost me easily 1M in net worth and probably more like 2.5M, just because we had to stretch to afford buying a house and two kids in day care in years where our investment portfolio would be 5+x bigger if we just maxed out 401k and bought the obvious plays I bought in much smaller quantities (eg AMZN, Apple, NVidia, BTC, etc.). My only hope to retire at 55 now is if my parents and in-laws leave way more inheritance than I’m expecting, which isn’t going to happen.

I had 4 kids in the teens through ‘22. Best decision of my life. Can’t have new kids now. And kids really are what it’s all about, even though they make day to day living pretty stressful. I’d never trade a day with my kids for a day of “retirement.” Jfc, what a bad deal.

retiring young to me doesn't mean ceasing to be a part of society. it means no longer spending my time doing things i don't like in pursuit of the acuisition of money.

there are already a few organizations/projects i'm part of that i could devote all my time to and feel good about it if i didn't care about how much money those efforts produced.

I’m not talking about hobbies. Sure, I’d play more music and take more bike rides but that wouldn’t take up all my time. An example would be a director for some organization that isn’t profit focused. Roles would include marketing, planning, budgeting, training etc.

You’re telling me that would be worse for my mind than litigating?

I'll be retiring at 53. Only 6 more months of working. I know I'm in a fortunate position, but I understand why most are unable to retire. If healthcare were more reasonably priced, I think a lot more people would pursue this option.

I am already making retirement plans and goals. Once the kids are out of the house in a couple years, we're going to hike the Camino, and sail around the Caribbean, make a trip to Antarctica (the only continent I haven't been to). Lots of plans on the bucket list. We want to do a lot of travel while we're still young enough and physically capable.

TBH I think that people with the drive to amass enough money to retire early are precisely the sorts of people that should continue working later.

Most of the early retirees I know are living quite well. I golf and fish with a few guys in their early to mid fifties. None of them live extravagantly, but they all seem enriched by their travel and passions. I do know a couple of burnouts that just collect disability and smoke pot all day every day, but they don't seem unhappy.

My doctor friend is actually fulfilled by work and enjoys operating on people. He says he will work until he is unable. He does travel extensively for a few months each year though.

It’s pretty simple:

People who get in the position to do this are, generally, slaves and know no other life. They have no hobbies, no friends who aren’t professional contacts, etc.

Lots of bros can’t stand their wives and kids or vice-versa.

Mid-50s are often highest-earning years, so it’s easy to slippery slope.

Also tend to have a lot of $$$ demands at that time in life. Sweet little daughters need someone to pay for NYU plus East Village apartment, oh and they need $5k/month for the next 5-10 years while they fuck through the city until they get married.

I’m kind of in a unique situation. NW of roughly 5 mm depending on how you value pensions. We have no debt whatsoever, and will have to survive on 16-17K per month in retirement. Once we start getting social security, we’ll be around 20-22K per month. We have free healthcare through the VA and my kids basically get free college. Yes, I think the VA overcompensates me, but I’m not going to turn it down.

I hate my job, fat fiancée hates her job. There are so many things I’d rather do than work.

This kind of thing is something that's hard to come to and accept that why you see people like rsf who are useless and impactless. Not sure if I can truly explain it better. It's something you really have to experience before it can make any sense. Why else would people like Elon musk or a Rothschild continue working.

I went to a public school and went to a T14 LS on a scholarship. My HHI is like $800k/year.

30% chance of going to Cornell isn't worth $40k/year/kid. Also, as a thought exercise: $40k/year x 12 + 70k/year x 4 = $760k. That's BEFORE grad school. You could basically send your kid to UF, buy your kid a business, have them run it, then use that to get into a top MBA program or whatever, or just have them keep expanding their business and have a few hundred k left over so they can get a downpayment for a house for each kid. That's for each kid.

Health care costs will absolutely destroy you if you try to retire before you are eligible for Medicare. I have run the numbers, and health care costs would eat up almost half of my income until Medicare kicks in.

But to answer the question more broadly, most people are poor. The median household net worth in the U.S. is around $100k. For non-homeowners, it is about $10k. For most Americans, retirement before Social Security isn't an option. I have a net worth of around $2.5 million in my mid-40's and no kids, and I would struggle to make the numbers work if I retired at 55 (mainly due to health care costs, as discussed earlier). LJL at the typical American with no savings outside of home equity retiring early.

Going without health insurance in your 50's or 60's while trying to retire early is just moronic. If you are in your 20's, then maybe, since you are likely to be both healthy and judgement-proof. But a 60-year-old FIREmo without health insurance is completely done here if they get cancer or get in a serious car accident or something. Decades of savings will be gone instantly, and you are back to wagecucking until you drop dead. No thank you. I'd rather just work for a couple more years until I can either afford insurance or am eligible for Medicare.

a better approach is to buy bottom of the barrel insurance that provides some ultimate backstop to your max out of pocket. also many states don't put medical debt on credit reports. so you can simply ignore or refuse to pay providers.

if you're very well-capitialized, this is a good dirtbag strategy to get good treatment at low cost

Even bottom of the barrel catastrophic coverage is super expensive for people in their 50's and 60's. And refusing to pay providers is super risky as a FIREmo. If they sue, you're fucked. Also, if you get cancer and need multiple rounds of radiation or chemo, at some point, they will stop giving you treatment if you don't pay your bills. The bottom line is that if you want to retire in the U.S. before Medicare kicks in, you need to budget a minimum of $20k per year (and probably more like $30k-$40k per year if you have any health problems) for health care expenses.

(guy who has never looked at the price of individual health plans for someone aged 50+)

Premiums alone will run around $2,000 per month, and that gets you an out-of-pocket max of just under $20k per year. So you probably need to budget $30k-$40k per year just for health care costs until Medicare kicks in. You could spend less if you are healthy. (My wife unfortunately takes several expensive medications that run $1000+ per month.) But probably around $15k-$20k per year is an absolute lower bound unless you want to risk losing everything if you get cancer.

Get on a health sharing plan like Christian healthcare ministries. Doesn’t cover preexisting but it’s like 500 a month

I'm a decade older than you and I have about the same. I'd retire if I was single. I will retire as soon as I have enough to support my family without working.

Everything is expensive as shit and if you have a job you like then you don't retire. Eventually they'll fire you or your company will implode and you'll become "retired" because that's how shit works.
