The point is, a profession is male dominated specifically because it has greater financial rewards. Men compete for those rewards, and therefore begin to dominate that profession. As for police, I think that's another good example of this principle in action. Yes, cops are overpaid. But police departments around the country are under massive political pressure to recruit and promote women. Nevertheless, despite the financial rewards, women refuse to enter the field, primarily, in my opinion, because it requires irregular hours, lots of overtime, some danger, a good bit of discomfort, and does not provide much work-life flexibility.

If women wanted to compete for money, they would be running to precincts to sign up. But they value other things over money (probably rightly so), therefore it should be no surprise that men, who compete for money, end up making more money on average.
