We're entering a really fucked up period where there's total breakdown in leadership at the highest echelons of society. It seems TPB depend on government to maintain some baseline level of coercive control while, paradoxically, the government increasingly relies on the private sector to provide expertise, with both sort of failing at the job all of a sudden. I was actually aiming to do a genealogy of different types of official corruption and try to predict what form would most likely become endemic in the U.S.
I haven't fully fleshed this out, but my gut tells me the Philippines is a good model of what to expect. In the Philippines, a bureaucrat takes a new job with no intention of being "corrupt." She (there are a lot of chicks in govt over there) just receives permit applications of some sort, and it just so happens that when she opens the evelopes, there's a wad of cash in every single one. What's she going to do? Refund the money? Report the last 50 people who had that job for taking bribes? Unless she literally sets the money on fire, she has no choice but to become "corrupt." Furthermore she could work at that job for 50 years and never gain an ounce of insight into how her own government operates. All she does is review permit applications. She would be useless as a whistleblower or even as a foreign agent. |

Date: September 27th, 2021 4:16 PM Author: Nighttime voyeur 1. I learned to read agencies by writing for one. There's no substitute for that experience. You learn REALLY quickly what it's not ok to say, and you learn tips and tricks for informing people as best you can given your limitations.
2. Unless you have worked as an agency counsel, you do not understand the degree to which lawyers control every single fucking little thing the government does. I don't give a fuck who the SecState is because I know who his lawyers are. I know what it's like to be in the room where someone says "I'm going to do x," only to be told "that's what the last 15 guys said" by Dr. No representing Counsel. When I tell xo things like "SecState isn't allowed to deviate from 'the intelligence,'" I'm saying he can't do that as a matter of law.
3. Unrelatedly, I see people losing their shit over the vaccine mandate, totally oblivious to the fact that it relies on FDA authorization reviewed under rational basis test. That's not sufficient for DP. There's scholarship on this and you can also skim the dockets on regulations.gov to see how this is playing out. |
