But this clip really underscores why this format was always so stupid and tailored to midwit brains and attention spans. They hit at least 5 different useful topics to explore and have to drop them and rush on to the next thing and there’s some dumb clock on the whole discussion. It’s annoying in the same way that Policy Debate is annoying and stupid ie a bad argument delivered in the cadence of the micromachines VO guy is a “point” when not refuted, even if the “loser” in the debate made one actual good point that refutes 8 of the “points” that the winners made. Assume the role of question asker and demand your opponent either agree with you or adopt a narrow position in an artificial vacuum youve created (I.e asking if women 50 years ago were happier as though the only thing that occurred in that time period was the emergence of feminism). She responded perfectly and Kirk was so flustered he started to argue that women living in sub-Saharan Africa are better off than women in the west. He did the same thing with Bill Maher when Maher asked if he was in favor of the legalization of pot. Kirk didn’t answer but asked is San Francisco better or worse now than 10 years ago with the unsupported inference being that legalizing marijuana caused a homeless epidemic.
The style is for someone who has no interest in having a discussion and instead wants to create setups to land his punchlines. Jordan Peterson does this too. |
