China's entire population preceding these events was something like 55-60 million, according to census records at the time. The population totals for the succeeding Jin imperial state only had about ~18 million within the census rolls. |

There's nothing "communism specific" about the death toll; it's just another instance of both Chinese political warfare's intrinsic bloodiness and typical mopping up to solidify power after a civil war. It's still morally objectionable, but it's a different part of the world, and Westerners often aren't really looking at it in the right context. |
