most of those albums cost millions of dollars to 'produce,' 'engineer,' 'master,' etc, in studios filled with giant banks of vacuum tubes and 2-ton mixing consoles that had to be installed by crane.

it's kind of crazy how much painstaking effort went into 'recording' what were essentially garage bands (Nirvana et al).

He was an IBM computer scientist, essentially ran the songs through their mainframes to determine PEAK pop appeal

The record sales were high enough to back it up. The record companies made bank selling LP's, then tapes, then CD's.

not even a couple grand anymore.

Buy Logic Pro for $200, a used Macbook Air, and a $99 interface, and you can literally record a professional sounding song if you know what you are doing. The floor is so low now

I remember that HBO Steve Iovine doc where they talked about during the recording of Springstein's "Born to Run" album they spent an entire week all day every day recording snare hits and listening to it and adjusting the mic position to get "the" snare hit for the album

these stories always sound so genius and inspirational but what they don't tell you is they spent a ton of time doing that kind of shit on records you've never heard of, too. that's why all those people are in there; someone to move mics around and someone else to listen to it until they get it just right. every room is different, every drum, every player, even mics of the same type. every record is a new endeavor.

yeah, this is what has always fascinated me, reading the accounts of the recordings of classic rock albums. the amount of autistic labor that went into it.

I watched the Rick Beato interview with Andy Wallace (the sound engineer on all the Alt Rock albums from the 90s) and the level of autism is insane. he would spend a whole day adjusting EQ levels on each drum individually, with a different EQ for each drum hit on multiple sections of each individual track (this is post production, AFTER the same thing had been done during recording).
