Imagine being a creative writing professor:
Jollimore, who has been teaching writing for more than two decades, is now convinced that the humanities, and writing in particular, are quickly becoming an anachronistic art elective like basket-weaving. “Every time I talk to a colleague about this, the same thing comes up: retirement. When can I retire? When can I get out of this? That’s what we’re all thinking now,” he said. “This is not what we signed up for.” Williams, and other educators I spoke to, described AI’s takeover as a full-blown existential crisis. “The students kind of recognize that the system is broken and that there’s not really a point in doing this. Maybe the original meaning of these assignments has been lost or is not being communicated to them well.”

Misalignment. The students aren’t using AI to scroll social media while they do something else. They’re not prompting AI to play Fortnite for them or something.
Activities that have meaning and value to them, they will do them themselves.
That they are using AI for schoolwork only tells you schoolwork has been judged useless. These aren’t eight year olds trying to get out of unpleasant multiplication tables. These are basically adults communicating, I don’t need any of this shit in my life. School doesn’t help me at all. They’re probably not wrong.

i wrote a whole thread on this this morning.
The 25k-300k investment in "college" is going to stop, extremely soon. 1% of the GDP will vanish, as the academic industry vaporizes.
Fuck the gdp anyway tho, and esp fuck those it will hurt the most - academicians and admins.
The real second-order consequence is that we will lose our warehousing capacity for 18-22yos. We have nowhere else to put them. They cannot and will not afford real housing. They cannot contribute meaningfully to the careers we have available. If they do not go to college, they will either remain adolescents in dad's house, or maybe cluster into shantytown ghettos.
We need to draft them into the army. Thats the answer

Are you saving for your kids’ college? Where will you send them after high school?

Lee has already moved on from hacking interviews. In April, he and Shanmugam launched Cluely, which scans a user’s computer screen and listens to its audio in order to provide AI feedback and answers to questions in real time without prompting. “We built Cluely so you never have to think alone again,” the company’s manifesto reads. This time, Lee attempted a viral launch with a $140,000 scripted advertisement in which a young software engineer, played by Lee, uses Cluely installed on his glasses to lie his way through a first date with an older woman. When the date starts going south, Cluely suggests Lee “reference her art” and provides a script for him to follow. “I saw your profile and the painting with the tulips. You are the most gorgeous girl ever,” Lee reads off his glasses, which rescues his chances with her.

It's surprising that two thigs are not obvious to these academics:
(i) If you want to test a student's knowledge, you can just have a paper test or use essay testing software to make them answer in class. This has always been the best way. People have been cheating on essays and take home exams for 30 years.
(ii) To the extent there was value in being able to write and edit and re-edit a 5 paragraph essay for school work, there really isn't value in it anymore. It's like if your calculus class wouldn't let you use a calculator. The new value is probably in someone using AI to coax out a persuasive essay or a well thought out research paper.

they know these things and they are indeed obvious to them
they're running a propaganda campaign to protest this because in your (i) they would have to do actual work, and they don't want to, and (ii) this would eliminate their sinecure "jobs" entirely
the propaganda about this is going to ramp up to a pretty severe intensity as these parasites do whatever it takes to try to cling to their parasitic privileged positions

are grading hand written essays that much more difficult? they could even take a picture or scan them and have chatgpt grade them if they wanted to be lazy. or have a grad student do it.

Point 2 is kind of bogus when it comes to humanities. These are timeless questions and themes. The “coaxing out” is built into the writing prompt from the get go. In a weird way, this applies more to a subject like law (but more in the practice of it than the theory/law school stuff, because AIs weakness is not understanding IRL dynamics/strategic stuff. It’s people that are good at this that are gonna keep making $$$

I asked Daniel a hypothetical to try to understand where he thought his work began and AI’s ended: Would he be upset if he caught a romantic partner sending him an AI-generated poem? “I guess the question is what is the value proposition of the thing you’re given? Is it that they created it? Or is the value of the thing itself?” he said. “In the past, giving someone a letter usually did both things.” These days, he sends handwritten notes — after he has drafted them using ChatGPT.
