Poasting is fundamentally an interactive, iterative, communal experience. My belief, based on some experience, is that one of the key ingredients to XO's greatness is it being a community of people to riff off of and with. I don't know if the model of the lone scholar just throwing off tomes and screeds in a solitary monk's chamber is viable here--although we may soon find out!--and I don't know if that promotes as good of poasting anyway. In fact, I'd say affirmatively it doesn't.
As a separate point, not necessary to my first one, I also wouldn't be so quick to wave away people poasting for the bumps and 180s. It may not be as pure a motivation but in some ways who the fuck cares; I think historically XO got many extraordinary poasts from people looking to preen and compete and lots of good art comes from those motivations too. The smaller the community, the less that's an effective factor. |
