the UK lost WWII. that's a difficult thing for them (and even americans) to accept, but as a historical matter, that's what actually happened to them. their loss in WWII was both territorial and financial (end of the empire combined with the selling of london to international financial interests).
the UK has not been an independent nation since that time. it has been a 'soft colony' of both 'american' power and international finance, which has often dictated terms at a very granular level. for example, during the colliery shutdowns of the 1980's, international firms and investment trusts were often the ones calling the shots regarding which specific mining pits in wales or yorkshire would get the axe.
britons themselves had no say in these matters, having lost the war.
