The fundamental internet experience from the early 90s until the early 00s was one of exploring across unknown terrain. it was an experience of space and the dangers and thrills of traversing.
You would "GO" in search of some new website, some new forum, some new bulletin board, often finding nothing. Sometimes you saw smoke in the sky. There might be fourteen people there, hanging out. There might only be the wall carvings of a lone soul already long gone, never to be seen again. But you'd scrape your name next to his, and leave yourself.
Sometimes you'd crest a wild mountain and come to see a valley teeming with people, an entire community, and realize "this place is not even on any maps, holy shit".
You would travel far and wide, see terrifying things, hear strange idioms, suffer some injuries, be changed.
You might come round a tree and see a beheading. Or encounter a hermit who shares philosophy.
The age of pioneers is over, and railways have been laid all over the place, rushing content from the various mines and factories back into the four or five Great Cities, back on the east coast: FAcebook, Twitter, Google, TikTok, etc.
Everyone just lives there now. No one leaves. Like fucking pampered dandies walking around in beaver fur caps and powdering their pussies with sea lion tusk powder. No one needs to go out exploring space on the internet. Everyone just stays in the cities and has shit drone-delivered to their doorstep.

It was a different breed back then. The thrill of stumbling across some obscure forum, claiming your corner of the world, carving your name into the ether. There was danger. There were debates, real ones, arguments on both sides. Back in like 2000, iirc you'd see real debates, earnest ones, about God’s existence. People argued their hearts out, and no one had all the answers. It wasn’t just about memes or mindless scrolling. We didn’t have algorithms shoving content at us; we searched, we stumbled, we debated. Every post mattered. Now we've all decided he doesn't exist except contrarians and people who just want the Bad Things to go away.
