You are forced to talk about diversity all the time--to accept The Other. In doing so, the Westerner creates what one might call a Semantic Enclosure in which diversity is not diversity, but is curated display. This is the paradox of curated alterity-- where the West enshrines "diversity" not as ontological opening but as a symbolic placeholder-- a simulacrum of difference domesticated into brand-safe semiotic units. First came the imported policies. Then the templated scripts. Then the monthly “difference audits,” which Tabitha from Corporate insists we conduct using scented markers and “feedback cloaks” sewn by local youth.
In our age, the new altars are SharePoint folders. The new Vestal Virgins are Credentialed Men of Soft Voice™ who facilitate empathy circles while hoarding billable hours.
It is all extremely equitable.
And extremely over.
