Allies aleeady held most of italy so had a string foothold on the continent. And southern france offered a much less costly avenue of further advance.
The mass human wave assault was less a strategic victory over the crumbling nazi state than a cynical insurance policy against the sobiets winning the race to the old middle kingdom of lotharingia (the Ruhr, low countries, and alsace lorraine) the industrial engine of europe.
This is how "d-day" should be understood and taught.
