a lot of it resolves back to gullibility and lack of introspection. you can get 'the masses' to act directly against their own interests for long periods of time (often indefinitely) simply by giving them some rather stupid narratives and pushing those narratives via 'leaders.'
it's obvious why a lot of these traits would have evolved in a cooperative tribal society, but in modernity, it's not ideal.

it's just that we are conscious. there are two irreconcilable aspects of our existence - our Being and our Knowing. We aren't supposed to "know" because now we know that there is nothing to know and no one to know it.
when you observe a cat in repose, it seems in perfect harmony with the indifferent universe. It just is. This can never be the case for us. we have to ask why there is Something, because Something makes us uneasy. and it's because we understand on some level that our existence is strange and awful and supernatural in relation to the world we inhabit. imho.
