this is our separated third-car garage. there were a bunch of cabinets, and i did the demo myself. these were the costs.

BUILDING MATERIALS & LABOR

- $3000 for 1200btu mini-split w/ install (had our licensed HVAC guy do the work; could have had it done cheaper by an unlicensed guy but wanted it done right)

- $400 for horse stall mats from tractor supply co (should have been $600 and they refunded me twice instead of once for a price adjustment)

- $150 for 2 LED lights for ceiling to replace the fluorescent lights

- $1200 in labor for our mexican handymen guys to patch/repair the damage from the cabinets, paint the walls and ceiling, install the LED lights, cut and install the horse stall mats, and install and paint the base boards and doors

- $200 in sherwin williams paint for walls and ceiling

- $350 in misc. materials from lowes for the mexican handymen (most of this cost was baseboards)

[subtotal $5300]

GYM EQUIPMENT

- $750 for a used commercial-style precor elliptical (old lady on FB marketplace barely used it-- they have odometers)

- $900 for titan t-3 power rack with lat tower attachment, plus safety pins and weight place holders

- $100 for cap the beast barbell

- $250 for iron plates (2x45, 2x35, 2x25, 4x10, 4x5, 4x2.5) [got shitty "balance form" ones from walmart]

- $500 for rubber hex dummbells (10s through 50s) [ditto re walmart]

- $100 for 3 tier dumbbell rack

[subtotal $2600]

...

grand total $7900

those 50lb dumbells are going to be outgrown very soon if not already.

we told you to get adjustable ones up to 90lbs

otherwise looks good although reno sounds like a lot for a garage gym

ive lifted in gyms for my entire adult life and never used more than 50s for anything but shoulder shrugs, breh.

for the reno, the HVAC was the big expense and a splurge. well worth it though. everything else was fairly cheap

this is the one of the few instances in which DIY is not credited. DIY mini splits are generally garbage quality, the good ones are just as expensive to buy and install yourself as sourcing through a pro is, installing it yourself voids any warranty, and federal tax credits on installation including the labor costs make it cheap enough just to hire pros. also, the tax credits are only available on the better quality units because of energy ratings.

this is the unit and it says energystar certified:

https://service.durastar.com/product/draw12f1b-12000-btu-wall-mounted-indoor-unit/

i had no idea there was even a tax credit for this. hvac guy didnt mention. does it matter that it's for a garage rather than the whole house?

hvac guys don't know this shit. i had to specify which model i wanted to mine so i got one that was on the list. i forget if all energystar cert stuff qualifies or only stuff above certain SEER ratings. it depends on location too.

shouldn't matter that it's just for the garage. there are additional state and local incentives in some places that can kick in if you REPLACE older hvac systems for the whole house, but the fed energy credit is just for installing energy efficient shit on the property.

tax credit is 30% of equipment and labor costs up to category and overall maximums.

yeah i got the minimum gym equipment to get going. the only thing that wasn't a bare essential was the rack lat pulldown attachment which was an extra $300.

we can add stuff as needed, based on what we're using and how much space we have. no need to spend a bunch right off the bat.

1) we're powergoy'ing with a lot of shit on this house now what we have our forever home in are country

2) you can't put a price on not having to go to a real gym and interact with people. all the small talk with the other regulars. my INTJ wife hates socializing.

3) with 2 kids and working, the time wasted going to a gym that's even 5-10 minutes away adds up quickly. getting dressed and getting into the car and walking from the parking lot and signing in etc, two ways -- that adds time beyond the commute. for example, wife has a busy day of work all day with a bunch of stupid scheduled meetings. she's lucky to find an hour gap to work out. if she has an hour gap, at our IRL gym that was an 8 minute drive no traffic, it meant she could only work out for 35 minutes to get back in time for her next meeting. with the home gym, she can do a full hour workout.

still very low value add for the price. your excuses can be overcome by simply adjusting your schedule to give yourself an hour and 15 minutes instead of an hour. go in the morning after fajr, go in the evening after the kids are asleep, carve out an extra fifteen minutes on your calendar in the middle of the day, etc. no one is as busy as you are describing

i just like having a complete workout when i'm at the gym and i'd feel limited with these setups. i go in 3x per week and it's plenty. i have a peloton at home, use it 3 hrs per week after work, i run 5ish miles outside a couple times per week, and i take a rowing class on saturday. i love having the variety.

what do you need at the gym that you can't have with a rack, barbell, plates and dumbells? i bet you're into some faggy weight machines

lol you mad. i don't really use any machines except for flys. it's just nice being able to walk to different stations, to have multiple types of cardio machines at my disposal, to stretch freely without feeling like i'm in a shoebox, stuff you will never experience again

beyond a power rack everything else is gravy. cardio you should be getting from thingdoing. gym memberships are complete flame if you have space for a home gym. if you're working out frequently the time driving to and from the gym, packing a bag, looking reasonably presentable and clean, etc. is a significant burden.

being able to do some lifts and then go to your own shower is an amazing luxury and cheap as fuck.

I still have a cheap gym membership when I want to do that, and an expansive yoga membership.

Still love just lifting at home. Usually before work etc and just wear boxers and watch what I want in tv. Even do some work during it a lot - did monthly billiny today in between sets

you paid several grand in labor to get the room ready. i.e. you didn't want to expend the energy and time doing it. all so you can create a room where the purpose is expending energy.

cr on the minisplit but everything else anyone could do (i.e. you hired a spic to do it).

why do you even need a new a/c unit in there anyway? no central air? is your current system not capable of capable of cooling down the house? are you pumping iron so hard that you're generating so much heat your current system can't handle it?

the spics did all sorts of shit i can't do and don't have the tools to do and even if i did have the tools i'd totally fuck them up. cutting these 3/4 " horse stall mats required special equipment; u cant cut that shit with a blade. i have no clue how to cut and install baseboards. there were major holes in the wall and broken molding around the door frames from the cabinets; i cant do drywall repair.

these spics were well worth the $1200 in labor. i got quotes from prole whites who wanted $3k for the same job. u know an honest worker when they just charge u for labor and dont build in the materials cost.

our garage has no setup for AC. how the fuck would we run our existing AC into the garage? u'd have to redo all the ducts and shit. that makes no sense.

completely skipped the heading re: 3 car garage.

ok not bad but this was an expensive home gym because most of it was literally finishing a garage.

yeah, most of the cost was finishing a garage, not gym equipment.

theoretically it could add value to the house bc it's more SF under air, but we're not selling anytime soon so who cares

having just redone my own garage with 3/4" rubber flooring as well, the "special equipment" required is a utility knife with a new blade every mat and a t-square to get the cuts straight.

UPDATE: 6 months in, and this is still 180. i'd want a tricep rope, an ez-bar and maybe a cage attachment for dips. thats really it.

our bench doesnt angle super steep on the decline (just -15) and i wish i had something even super steep for crunches and situps to make it harder.

other than that, this was worth every penny

they're 180 and eurofags have the right idea.

i have no idea how it affects our bill, but our 250 SF gym gets hot/cold and totally usable within in a couple minutes on a cold/hot day. certainly seems more efficient than a regular HVAC.

why arent these more common in the US?

My hvac guy told me back in the day oil was so cheap they could heat a house with no insulation for pennies they'd just blast the heat. I think they're getting more widespread now due to tax credits and the tech is much better now
