You get a free spoon with purchase!
The 2007 Essencia from the Royal Tokaji Wine Company, the fifth made in the modern era, is an otherworldly wine that has difficulty fitting into the definition of “wine.” My Pavlovian reaction tasting it from bottle was identical to my reaction when I tasted it at the winery in September 2014. You cannot help but laugh at the sheer audacity of its syrupy pour into your glass or preferably on to a spoon. (As an aside, I strongly recommend this traditional method of consuming Essencia. I can only analogize to Asian pussy tasting better with full bush. So Essencia should be consumed by spoon like a child receiving medicine and inside every one of 2,057 lacquered presentation boxes there is a free, hand-blown, crystal spoon. Do use them.)

Pretty retarded way to spend $2K on dinner. I don’t know anything about Detroit but this seems like one of those places I see on Instagram putting gold foil and caviar on everything. I actually suspect you may have had one of the higher credit scores in the dining room that night given their target demographic.π¦π¦§
In order of the bill:
$250 is a retarded price for a single steak. That’s a good 4 course meal at many restaurants. Hell, the six course tasting menu at Jean Georges is $298. You could get a porterhouse for 3 at Gallaghers in NYC for that, or a 34oz dry aged RR Ranch at Tête d’Or.
$70 for a dozen oysters is stupid too. $5 per oyster is what Michelin starred places in NYC charge. I guess the costs are higher in Detroit (though there is a huge airport there flying shit in daily). But that’s at least $10 too high.
The Krug is a good bottle of Champagne, but that markup is ridiculous for a non-vintage bottle. It’s so stupid I had to check it online and it turns out it’s listed at $600 ($100 less than you paid) on their online menu: https://primeandproperdetroit.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Wine-Book.pdf Also, their corkage fee is $50 and their only restriction is that the wine can’t be on their menu. If I’m spending more than $400 on a bottle of champagne, I’m probably bringing it myself/having it from my wine locker at my club. But you do you.
The $68 crab and potato dish is also a ripoff.
You didn’t get any normal steakhouse sides like creamed spinach or mushrooms. But hats off if you actually ate the broccoli and Caesar salad. This is a reminder to get a colonoscopy.
You blew your wad on the Champagne and didn’t get a bottle of red wine. I would have “downgraded” to a $500 bottle of Grande Dame and picked up the 2018 Château Villemaurine (St. Émilion) for the same all-in price.
The Tokaji Essentia was a super dumb impulse buy. I would have had a glass of the Château Coutet Sauternes, which is excellent and well-priced. (Yquem would be TCR but this place doesn’t have it by the glass, only a few places do.)

I didn’t provide a breakdown.
If he were some kind of connoisseur and it really meant a lot to him to have that Krug bottle or there were something specific about this $250 steak that warranted the price, I would have no quibble (though that would be hard to believe). But it appears to me a an outsider that he went to a ripoff restaurant and was upsold on every retarded suggestion the waiter and somm had, and that he could have had a comparable meal for like $600-800, even in NYC which is more expensive. Maybe I’m wrong—as the guy does actually know a good amount about cooking/food—but I get the sense that this was a splurge that got out of hand rather than some kind of planned exercise.
This is part of what has turned me off from fine dining in recent years despite having spent six figures on it in my 20s/30s and having been the beneficiary of many other crazy meals via my parents or expense accounts. Especially outside of big cities, there are all kinds of salt-bae type philistines running crazy tacky restaurants (a la karma sushi).

You're wrong about this place. The quality of everything is incredible. It's actually my second time eating there this year. We actually had the same server & it was the same sommelier. On Valentine's Day, we probably talked to him for about an hour (we did a wine pairing and this guy was super knowledgeable). At the end, he brought us each glasses of the 2017 Royal Tokaji on the house. That's how I found out about the Essencia (he let me try the tiniest amount of it)
Also, when he brought out that Krug bottle, he told us it's his personal favorite in the restaurant. He also told us that on Valentine's Day, so he's either consistent with his lies or he genuinely meant it.
The price point is shitty and you do have a good point re: just paying the corkage fee. I'd rather have spent $300 more and brought that bottle + a bottle of 1er Cru Dujac
