Sounds about right. $100k HHI in 1995 = $400k HHI today. Rule of thumb is being able to afford two kids in private schools and in 1995 you could do it at $10k per kid, the standard rate for a good prep school outside NYC/HCOL markets. Those schools are now $40-45kish (HCOL cities preps are now 60k+). You'd need 400k HHI at a minimum to pay 85-90k in tuitions while saving for college and retirement and having a decent house and still complaining about cost of living. 500k pushes you into more comfortable territory and 600k is doing well.

Salary inequality between industries these days is amazing and is probably one of the most under covered topics. There are kids a few years out of college making $125-150k while middle managers with master's in their 40s are making barely more than that. And in tech the wunderkinds can be making close to a million while still in their 20s. Neighbor's kid is one of those, parents are shocked he's pulling in 800k total compensation and he's only 27. Kid does work 65 hour weeks at a startup. Which is substantially more than even cliched I-bankers of the late 1990s-2000s era when most of us came of age.

It is bizarre. I have a younger cousin who was a super nerd who studied some kind of aeronautical engineering.

If he had been in my age cohort he would have been lucky to get a job at NASA or Raytheon or something like that and would be making like mid-6 figures. But he came of age when Space X was around and now he's a multimillionaire and is even getting married and might have children someday.
