My 56 yo brother just told me he has zero retirement savings

Date: September 22nd, 2025 9:26 AM Author: Barry Stanton He has about 200K equity in his home that he owes about 400K. Lives paycheck to paycheck and has two children in high school. His wife has a fake business that loses about 3k per month and she has nothing saved for retirement and hasn't been contributing to SS for over a decade. He cashed in his 401K to purchase his current house. He and his wife both drive brand new vehicles and from outside appearances, seem to be well off.
I didn't want to dogpile on him and lightheartedly said "It'll all work out!" but, we both knew I was lying.
He was visibly upset when I said my wife and I could retire at any time. |

I have a current net worth of around $2.5 million. My advisor tells me I could retire comfortably by age 57-58, and I most likely wouldn't run out of money if I retired at 52.
But those projections assumed that my spending remains the same. Realistically, if I quit my job before the wife and I are eligible for Medicare, I am paying at least several thousand per month in health care costs, making early retirement impossible. So basically I am working until a minimum of age 65 no matter what. And what does a lifetime of living frugally get for me? More money at age 65 when I'll be too old to do anything fun anyway. Some days I want to say "Fuck it," set all my retirement contributions to $0, and finally buy a sweet ass car and some nice vacations. But I'm too much of a beta cuck to every actually do that. |
