In Chrono Triger (1995), you carry on in the first area (the "millenial fair," named after the generation of the Losers playing the game) like in a typical JRPG, talking to people, stealing items, opening chests, whatever. You are then arrested and sentenced by a tribunal to imprisonment/death.
The Seinfeld finale (1998) is precisely like this, you spend 9 seasons watching the characters get themselves into mischief, not realising or caring that they are breaking laws, and are Bad, because it's TV. Larry David is low-key into JRPGs imho. Chrono Trigger came out around the time he left the show, and he had nothing else going on, so it was perfect timing.
