First of all, I was off-duty, not Curating shit. Part 1 is a triumph, the rest are meh. The dropoff is on par with Jaws or something, the latter movies just don't Matter imho.

Second, here is what I'm talking about:

1. When characters swear, they will say things like, "Jesus Christ!" Nowadays, (((they))) don't even mention that historical character who was said to exist in Nazareth or something at some point. (((They))) have driven him out of cultural relevancy. Nowadays, Film characters never go around using God's name really at all, because (((they))) have established in the popular consciousness that he does not exist.

Also — because of this shift in cultural norms, you can identify it as a prole tell when someone says "Jesus Christ" irl, whereas a chill UMC bro or Hot Girl will be more inclined to just say "fuck" over and over again like characters on The Real World or something.

2. Just the idea of an impossibly Short man doing anything irl but being ridiculed, would be anachronistic if they tried to make a Film like this today with similar casting imho. I mean his only friend is a silent gen mad scientist but still.

I had a college gf who was obsessed with this movie and made me watch it like once a week with her. She would always gush about how happy it made her and about how "life was so much better back then"

In retrospect she would have been ridiculously easy to convert to 1488 and I definitely should have married her

II/III (kinda one big film) are solid movies. I think they mark the start of Zemeckis' obsession with tech to the dtermiment of his films, though. I is nearly perfect so the dropoff will be steep but the comparison to Jaws is not a good one.

theres a lot of scholarship waiting to happen about that movie (like you ignore 2 and 3).

Whats the verdict on whether life was better in 55 or 85? Its hard to say.... The movie tries to sell 85 and hip and full of cool technology like walkmans. But it is equivocal. Its impossible not to look at 55 through Marty's eyes and see how cool it was and notice how forces believed to be "liberating" (like black music) were just starting to impact america

I always thought the 1985 from the start of the first movie was meant to be run down and trashy compared to 1955. you have the bum sleeping in the town square and the clock tower is still broken, and a few other things like that.

the movie literally shows Lyon Estates being sold as the brand new american dream and by 1985 it's just shithole tract housing for losers. Loraine's family in 1955 is all excited and happy to watch TV while eating dinner and by 1985 she's pounding vodka while her loser husband laughs like an idiot at the same show and no one else pays attention. and yea, the clock tower, homeless guy, nig mayor, etc. basically in 1985 they had the same shit as 1955 only more run down and depressing.

Just watched it recently w the kids. Hadn't seen it in probably 25 years. It's amazing how well it holds up. The pacing is great. My kids were on the edge of their seats and never got bored.

I never realized that Doc was getting a "shake down" from the cop in 1955. I always thought he had a permit for the weather equipment lol.

Crispin Glover is a complete weirdo, and his early George seems over the top, but the transition he does is great. It's actually a pretty good performance.

They showed this at a local drive in last month; my kids loved it and it's a really great drive in movie.

I think Crispin Glover's performance is just about perfect. His teenage version is introduced as a peeping tom (how different that would read today) and he plays the line between lovable outcast and weirdo pervet perfectly.

Moment to moment he so perfectly deconstructs while exactly portraying what was disturbing about the moralistic repression of 50s culture. Like you know on some basic level within his first 30 seconds speaking on screen that the original 1985 Crispin Glover was a serial rapist with a micropenis in that cookie cutter subdivision like GSK.

ET, Star Wars, and other lesser 80s movies like Goonies, etc, will all fade from memory in time, but Back to the Future will still be of interest to people in 100 years. its stature only grows every year.

ET has already faded bigly

It's hard to envision Star Wars ever fading, but it might be self-destructing before our eyes

The sad thing is that shitlennials and zoomers can relate to slacker McFly much more than Indiana Jones

i read someone else post this on xoxo before, but Back to the Future is basically the perfect movie. Great story, great suspense, memorable characters, and it functions simultaneously as a comedy, action movie, sci fi movie, and romcom

I think that was me. I actually stole that take from a film school grad friend of mine. He'll go on forever about how every second of the film is perfectly paced. I give him shit for the corny "Pepsi Free" bit at the diner but I mostly agree with him. There's not a moment of that movie that distracts you from the characters and plot.

It really is a wonder of filmmaking. There needs to be an in-depth study of what exactly came together in the 70s and 80s to produce so much classic shit.

Zemeckis had to make Romancing the Stone before anyone would bite on the BTTF script. Also barely got MJF on board; Marty was almost Eric Stoltz, I think (talk about alternate timelines).

They actually filmed w Eric Stoltz for 6 weeks before realizing it just wasn't working. They had to reshoot all of it, but some footage still survives.

Apparently he was also not very pleasant to work with. Tom Wilson (Biff) absolutely hated him. He insisted on being called Marty even off-camera lol.

Don't forget having Spielberg as Impresario, same as Forrest Gump.

A big reason is that the 70s and 80s had a breakout of young filmmakers with fresh new ideas.

Coincidentally, those filmmakers are still making films today and are jealously hoarding their power and influence.

Spielberg hasn't made a truly classic film since Saving Private Ryan. I've argued about this before here but I think that his making Schindler's List (a truly classic film) basically broke his brain. He decided he needed to become "serious" and it ruined him.

I'll go to the mat for A.I. but I get that it didn't click with most people.

Catch Me if You Can is, for me, a true classic.

Ready Player One is in his top three (probably two) worst but I'm still excited to see what he does with West Side Story.

Don't get me wrong I think he's made plenty of good, very good, even great films post Saving Private Ryan. But I don't think he's made an AFI-100 caliber film since then and that's a stark difference vs. his output in the prior two decades when he was almost inhuman in his ability to produce classic after classic.
