The French who tried to map Canada were no better. One guy got stuck going up the St. Lawrence river twice and never even made it close to the great lakes. Separately, these Spanish bastards could map out the pacific coast but had no idea how far it was from east coast. Their maps of California make North America look tiny and shriveled, so it's pretty obvious France had no idea how much land it was giving up when we made the Louisiana Purchase. It's like they thought the coast was just a few hundred miles west of the Mississippi river.
